BIG BASH: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Thursday’s Big Bash opener between between Hobart Hurricanes v Sydney Sixes with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

The Edge has been a professional cricket trader for over 12 years, and we are delighted to have his columns on BETDAQ Tips. He provides his best bets on a points scale between 1 and 5, with 5 being a rare max bet.

Because we see so much action in-running on cricket, he will also provide some in-running strategies that could develop in-play and lead to some excellent value bets. The Edge covers all forms of cricket: Test Matches, ODI’s and T20’s but his favourite competition is the Indian Premier League each season.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

It’s that time of year again as we kick off the Big Bash in Australia! We should have nearly two months of top quality cricket full of drama and in-running trading swings on BETDAQ Betting Exchange! For those of you who haven’t been following the main cricket news, we have three changes to the usual T20 format in this year’s Big Bash. They will be important so make sure you’re aware of them.

They are:

  • A two over powerplay called after the 10th over by the batting team
  • A mid-game substitute
  • League table bonus point if ahead of opponents 10 over score, if bowling team are ahead then they get the bonus point

To be quite honest, I’m not sure what to make of the changes. Usually these types of changes just haven’t caught on in cricket in the past. I think they will likely bring more wickets, will the bonus point an obvious target coming up to 10 overs. And much will be made about the “X-Factor” substitute. I reckon that’ll be priced in very quickly to the markets and we’ll just have to adjust our thoughts after seeing the playing XI.

Of course we also have the “new normal” around the world to factor in with Covid19. That will see some changes to home fixtures and we will have some neutral games with some grounds hosting International cricket. We will have a lot of games here in Hobart before Christmas.

We start with a cracker as the Champions Sydney Sixers travel to take on the Hobart Hurricanes. The Sixers will likely get stronger throughout the tournament as their stars come back from International duty and such. The same can be said about Hobart however who are missing some key players.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

With this being the first game I wouldn’t be too confident on what type of conditions we will get until we see some action. With the volume of games however I would expect a pretty good wicket for batting. The groundsmen won’t have much choice but to prepare a very good wicket given the amount of traffic we will have on it before Christmas – the league won’t want to see 100 v 100 in two week’s time!

The average score batting first here last season was 176 with the lowest score 147 all out which was chased. After that we saw some big scores between 175 and 197. Batting first was definitely a small advantage. The season before that the average score was 165 and in 2017/2018 is was 171 so you can see that batting conditions are usually good.

RECOMMENDED BET:

We should have a pretty close game here between two even looking sides on paper. The one thing I would say is focus on the team news in this year’s BBL because we could see a lot of changes. For example, Hobart brought in Lamichhane this season which was a big signing for them but he unfortunately tested positive for Covid19 so he’ll be out of action for a while. Australia have very strict quarantine rules too which means that Malan won’t be playing for Hobart. I think today is a good day to back the Sixers at 2.08 – I would have them as favourites given the players Hobart are missing.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

I’ve already touched on this above but the team news is definitely going to be a big angle in this year’s BBL and perhaps we could see some big movement here. Hobart are strong on paper, but they are missing some key players here and perhaps when the team sheet comes out and people see how weak it is we will see a move. That being said, the Sixers are missing players too.

Obviously with the new rules I would spend a lot of time in the opening games seeing what the market does around these new rules. With change brings uncertainly and that’s what betting markets don’t like. We could see some very wrong in-running prices and if you’re early on getting a handle on these changes then you could have a lot of success early in the tournament. I would expect the markets to adjust after a few games, but early on it’ll be very interesting!
