England v Australia 1st ODI

MATCH OVERVIEW:

England and Australia move onto the ODI series on Betdaq Betting Exchange as the sides meet in Trent Bridge on Thursday. Unfortunately with the T20 series locked at 1-1, the weather in Manchester meant we didn’t get to see a winner of that. One of the main talking points of the T20 series was England resting Jofra Archer for the must win second T20 – the question being if you rest your star bowler for a series against Australia – what context does bilateral cricket have these days? Interim coach Marcus Trescothick has already said we’ll see him rested again at some stage in the ODI series as the ECB continue to manage his workload. Is it any wonder T20 franchise cricket is taking over?

Both sides are definitely approaching this series with a view to the future. Australia need to find a solid replacement for David Warner at the top of the order. Their bowling line-up looks pretty settled, and obviously middle order places are always up for grabs. Liam Livingstone is a man who knows this only too well given he was dropped from the ODI side, now he’s back in after an excellent T20 series. He said his goal was to play his way back in with T20 cricket and he has done just that! England need to get off to a positive start without Jos Buttler at the top of the order who is injured, and it’ll be interested to see how Harry Brook does as captain.

Australia have dominated England in the ODI format recently, and let’s not forget that they are current World Champions too. This will be a very tough ask for a young England side still finding their feet. They are also going through plenty of change too with Brendon McCullum taking over as coach in all formats – for the time being however the latest update from the ECB is he won’t be in the white ball dressing room until January.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

Trent Bridge is usually an excellent place to play white ball cricket. It’s usually very good for the batters, and we can see some very big scores here. This summer was pretty low scoring in domestic cricket, but obviously the Hundred was largely low scoring across all grounds. We’ve actually gone quite a while without decent ODI cricket here – the last game was in 2023 but that was Ireland so it’s hard to read too much into the scores given the gulf in class between the sides. England scored 334/8 and won by 48 runs – prior to that you have to go back to 2019 for the last ODI here was in 2019 and cricket has changed a lot since then.

RECOMMENDED BET:

It’s no surprise to see Australia come into the 1st ODI as the favourites. They went into each T20 as favourites – their largest price was in Manchester where a full game wasn’t expected to that would have brought the sides closer together. They have come into this tour in a good place, and they are playing excellent cricket too. Bar a Livingstone blitz in the 2nd T20 they have been well on top, and the 1.62 is big enough to back here to get off to a winning start.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

Although there has definitely been a lack of ODI cricket here in recent years, I would still go into the game with the idea that conditions for batting will be good – obviously take the first few opening overs to confirm conditions, but I would suggest batting first will provide a slight edge here. I’d have more confidence in the Australian batting at the moment compared to the England batting, so hopefully they bat first and that provides a nice trade. Other than that, I’d be keen to take on the mid-to-low England order outside of Livingstone who is in great touch.
