1st ODI INDIA v ENGLAND: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Tuesday’s 1st ODI between INDIA v ENGLAND with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

After an excellent T20 series that went down to the final game, we move onto the ODI series on Tuesday morning. We have had seven games in Ahmedabad, we move to Pune and we will stay here for the all three games in the ODI series. The T20’s were excellent for trading on BETDAQ Betting Exchange, and we should see another great series here without too much change in personal. Although it must be said that England captain Eoin Morgan hinted at giving some of the fringe players a chance during the ODI series.

England have already suffered the massive blow of losing Jofra Archer through injury, and he is expected to miss the start of the IPL too. It will be interesting to see what England decide to do, as the likes of Ben Stokes have said they are keen to keep playing in Indian conditions before the IPL which starts on April 9th. India came out on top in the T20 series, but we all saw that there wasn’t much between the sides. Archer out is a big blow for England however and that will likely give India a big edge.

It looked like India finally found an excellent opening pair with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. It makes sense to move Kohli up the order, and while the media might shout for that I’m not sure they will want Kohli there so early in an ODI. It makes sense in T20 cricket, but let’s just wait and see what they do in this series. In fairness, is there a better opening pair in world cricket than those two? India have been searching for a partner for Sharma so a while now. We should have an excellent game here with the England batters in good form too – although they did collapse in the final T20 chasing a big score – they got themselves into a reasonably good position and then threw it all away within three overs.

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

The weather is expected to be good in Pune for all three ODI’s at the moment, and they will also be played behind closed doors. England and India have played an ODI here before, with India chasing down England’s 350/7 in 48.1 overs. Kohli scored a century that day, while most of the England batters got in but didn’t go past 80 with Roy, Root and Stokes all scoring 60+. Pune usually favours the batsmen, however with this being the first ODI I would go into the game with an open mind and assess the pitch in-running. If I had to lean towards something I would expect a good pitch and a score of 300+. There’s going to be three games here and the groundsmen will have to prepare a decent wicket.

RECOMMENDED BET:

I favoured England for most of the T20 series as I thought they offered the value in what was a very close series. I think the loss of Archer is huge though, and I would expect India to come out on top today and in the series. For me they are worth backing at 1.6, as we could see some players rested for England too. The toss news will be very interesting, as I said above some of the big stars are keen to keep playing before the IPL but Morgan has hinted at giving fringe players a chance. India look in great form with the bat, and without Archer England could really concede a lot of runs. At 1.6 or bigger India are worth backing.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

It will be very interesting to see if India change their mind and push Kohli up to open. I think it’s a no brainer in T20, but I would leave him at three in ODI’s – but I would expect to see Sharma and Dhawan opening the batting. Without Archer, there’s a lot of pressure on Mark Wood and I’d be expect the England bowling in this ODI. I’d expect good conditions and the batsmen to have the edge, and losing Archer might just be the difference. India have chased down a massive score here already against England – given the chance of dew I’d probably bowl first but as it’s the first ODI I’d have an open mind about that one.

The England batting looks very strong, but they will need to get in and stay in, rather than just hit a quick 40 odd. After Morgan I would be keen to get against them as their middle order folded quickly on Sunday. Perhaps Curran down the order is worth supporting but not for a big stake. India seem in great form with the bat, and I’d be very happy to get on them while batting for my main trade in this game.
