THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Wednesday’s 2nd T20 between Australia v England with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The T20 World Cup is edging closer now as the days go by, and Australia host England in the 2nd T20 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange on Wednesday morning! We saw a very high scoring game at the weekend with England coming out on top by just eight runs. It looked like Australia could have chased down England’s 208/6 but England bowled very well towards the end, and Australia kept losing wickets. Before Rim David got out off the final ball of the 14th over, Australia looked in a superb position on 158/4 – probably even after that too but David Warner quickly followed. We probably won’t have such a high scoring game this time around but I’d expect the bat to win over the ball again.
England will be absolutely delighted with their opening performance. A lot of sides are having warm-up games at the moment, and while this will have the feel of a warm-up given all the prep for the World Cup; you can’t beat a series! The only thing England would like to improve on is getting Ben Stokes in the runs – he only managed nine runs off nine balls the weekend and while the middle-order didn’t do well they kept playing their shots as England do. Plus the likes of Harry Brook and Moeen Ali played very well in Pakistan.
For Australia, they need to improve their bowling but to be fair they will likely have a stronger bowling line-up come the World Cup. Tim David not getting any runs and getting out at a huge moment possibly puts him under pressure (a little!) given the competition for those middle order slots but surely they have to give him a run here. The top order went well, given if Cameron Green got out early. We should have another close game here to be honest!
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
The teams move onto the Manuka Oval in Canberra for the 2nd T20, and we actually have the final T20 of the series here too. We’ve only had three International T20’s here prior to this series, but obviously we have had a big gap in the cricket calendar with Covid19. Sri Lanka played here in February, and although we probably shouldn’t read too much into that the first inning score was 121/6 before Australia chased it down easily. Before that you have to go back to 2020 when India posted 161/7 and won by 11 runs. We had two games here in the Big Bash last season and we saw first inning scores of 140/8 which was chased easily and 200/7 which won by 34 runs. I’d expect good scoring conditions here to be honest; but it’s hard to say whether there’s an edge to bat or bowl first.
RECOMMENDED BET:
Not from a betting point of view, it would be nice to see Australia win here so we can have a series decider later in the week! But more importantly, from a betting point of view my opinion hasn’t really changed based off the first T20. There isn’t much between the sides, but England look marginally the better team in my opinion. Their batting in blockbuster, and their bowling is just that little bit better than Australia missing some of their front line bowlers. I’m happy to back England at 1.9 or bigger – even if we get another higher scoring game I would expect their bowlers to just shade it.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
Although it’s hard to say whether or not there’s an edge batting or bowling first looking at the ground data, I would go into this game expect the bat to dominate the ball. Although we have to go back to the 2020/21 Big Bash season for more data – and that is a good bit away to be honest – we can see some reasonably high scoring games. We saw first inning scores of 189/1, 177/5 (chased), 219/7 and 209/8 in that tournament. Perhaps it might pay to bat first given a high scoring game and run rate pressure, but I would tilt my trading towards both batting sides here. I think we’ll see a good move on the side who bats first as the post a big total, and then we can green up at the innings break or switch to the chasing side for a trade.
