BIG BASH: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Wednesday’s Big Bash game between Perth Scorchers v Melbourne Stars with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
We have the second game at Aurora Stadium on Wednesday as Perth Scorchers take on the Melbourne Stars. The Scorchers came in the tournament very well fancied but they got off to a terrible start against Melbourne Renegades when losing by 7 wickets. They could only managed 130 all out and even though the Renegades got a lot of swing with the new ball it was still a very poor innings from the Scorchers.
The Scorchers strength is their bowling, but they never got a chance to show their skills trying to defend 130. It’ll be interesting to see how they get on here. Melbourne Stars started their campaign with a win, but it would have been bitterly disappointing for them to lose against Brisbane Heat. We saw just how poor the Brisbane bowling was against Sydney Thunder on Monday morning! The Stars had their best season last year before collapsing in the Playoffs – and it looks like they’re going to have a very strong group stage again.
Their bowling went very well against the Heat, but the Scorchers should pose a tougher test and we’ll find out more about them today. I’m not sure I like the idea of Stoinis opening but I can see the logic behind it with how destructive he can be. With Fletcher in the side I don’t think he’s needed at the top of the order however. Maxwell looked in good touch in their opener, and we know he’ll be very important for the Stars. We should have a cracking game here.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
This is an “out ground” so we don’t have much data. We saw a game here yesterday as Hobart Hurricanes played Adelaide Strikers. Hobart posted a score of 146 all out after 19.3 overs and while that score looked pretty light we did have a lot of market movement during the chase on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. The Strikers bounced between the 1.2’s and close to 2.0 a couple of times as they lost early wickets after a four off the first ball! They recovered well and I would suggest the team batting first should be aiming for 160. I feel that’s a reasonable target after the sides have seen conditions in this game.
RECOMMENDED BET:
Perth Scorchers were very poor in their opening fixture, but you don’t become a bad side overnight. They have been solid in the Bis Bash and have a very good side on paper. Their bowling should go very well. The Melbourne Stars have a lot more stars (excuse the pun!) in their batting line-up but given conditions aren’t easy for batting they might not fire. I can see this being a very close game, and I see the value being with the Scorchers at 2.26. To be honest, this game is hard to call because it’s so close but the value is with the Scorchers at the odds given I have it as a coin toss.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
We had wickets in the open overs for both sides yesterday, so it looks like you should support the bowling side with the new ball here. Indeed, both sides were two down in the opening two overs. We had a lot of market movement early on, so supporting the bowling side definitely paid off yesterday early. Once a batsman gets settled here it looks good for batting, but getting settled seems to be the tricky bit. I wouldn’t jump on the batting side unless they have faced a decent amount of balls and look to be timing it well.
We have two good bowling sides on display here, so while the 146 might not have been enough yesterday we could see a similar score. I feel the side batting first will be aiming for 160, but it depends how many early wickets they lose. The Scorchers were very poor batting in the first game, and I wouldn’t be overly keen lumping on them until they look settled batting. I feel the Scorchers bowling could go very well in these conditions, and I’d be keen to support them if they bowled first or were defending a par score (at least).
