THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Wednesday’s 1st Test between New Zealand v England with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The England Test side kick off their 2023 with a tour of New Zealand, and we have two exciting Test matches coming up over the next few weeks on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. This should be an excellent series between two sides who like to play attacking cricket, it’s just a shame we only have two Tests and not more! Bazball will be put to the test further, but so far the new England coach has yet to put a foot wrong. England have a huge year ahead with a home Ashes series, and with conditions in New Zealand not too far away from English conditions, this is a good starting place.
Some of England’s squad have had some time off, and such is the way cricket is around the world at the moment some have been in Australia, the UAE and South Africa all for T20 tournaments. Remember when we used to speak about player burn-out? Depends on the money these days whether that point still stands! There’s been a bit of drama off the pitch prior to this series with Cyclone Gabrielle stopping the players from training. Mount Maunganui hasn’t been effected so we should have no issues with the Test match, but I believe it has stopped some of the New Zealand players traveling on their original schedule.
This will be a day/night Test which should bring in a big crowd. I have to say I like the day/night Tests, but not everyone does. England pacer Ollie Robinson said in the build-up he doesn’t like the pink ball. Stuart Broad comes back into the England fold, and as ever it will be interesting to see the plans for him and Anderson – surely this is their last Ashes summer! Brendon McCullum will know conditions very well, and I can hardly see him telling his England side to stop attacking when they have been so successful.
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
This will be the fourth Test match here, with Test cricket only coming here in 2019. England were the first to play Test cricket here, and New Zealand blew them away winning by an innings and 65 runs. There’s been three results from the three games, and Bangladesh actually managed a shock win here in 2022. Batting has looked pretty tough here in the past, and I would expect to see the bowlers on top given we should see a lot of movement off the wicket in that time-frame between the sun setting and the lights kicking in. I would expect reasonably decent batting conditions during the day as we’ve had some big scores here – and it goes without saying to keep an eye on the radar given the weather around New Zealand at the moment.
RECOMMENDED BET:
We have a very open market, and I’m sure it’s going to be a very good Test for trading. You really wouldn’t be surprised to see all three outcomes trade odds on at some point throughout the Test. England come into the Test as the favourites at 2.84 but there really isn’t much in it with New Zealand 3.05 and the draw 2.9. I was very surprised to see the draw trading so short – I know we do have some weather worries but given the two bowling line-ups and how attacking the batters will be, I’m happy to lay the draw from an outright point of view at 2.9. As I said above, we should see a lot of movement given it’s a day/night Test and I would be surprised if we had a draw here.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
Although I am happy to lay the draw from an outright point of view, as I said above I really wouldn’t be surprised to see it trade odds on at some point. I feel the side batting first can take advantage of the best conditions wicket wise, and we have saw some big scores in the first innings here. New Zealand batted second when they beat England by an innings here too, and usually we see low scores in the third and fourth innings. I might pay to keep a bit of your stake back to lay the draw lower later in the Test. England have been so good with the bat recently it’s hard to get away from that trade, and I feel we will see the most market movement when England bowl to New Zealand – I would expect the English bowlers to go well here, and then the England batters to score quickly and move the Test along. It should be an exciting Test match, and don’t forget to keep the radar open for any weather trades that might pop up.
