Obviously Manchester United have taken all the headlines – there’s so much going on at the club where do you even begin. They were totally embarrassed last weekend by Brentford, and now we have the usual from the players – leaking that “Erik ten Hag’s tactics aren’t a good fit for the squad” – this is their fourth manager. While all the spotlight is on United, Liverpool have dropped four points against Fulham and Crystal Palace – considering the level we judge Liverpool at these days that is a huge blow in the title race.

Manchester City have set the bar so high in the title race, you could be forgiven for thinking that it was nearly over. Indeed, we have had a massive shift in the Outright prices – only two games into the season. For Liverpool; the two draws were “just one of those things.” If you look at the xG figures and the performances, you wouldn’t be worried. They created an xG figure of 2.39 against Fulham and 2.36 against Crystal Palace where they had to play with ten men for a large part of the game too. It was a moment of madness from Nunez but nobody is hitting the panic button at Anfield. Yes, the four points dropped is a huge setback and could indeed cost them the title, but they are still a top side who played well and just didn’t get the win.

You can’t say the same about Manchester United. You could write a book on how bad things are at the club and you still couldn’t cover every detail. The vibes out of Old Trafford now are that the owners are reasonably happy to sell – let’s see how that plays out because the fans aren’t far away from really turning the atmosphere sour. There is a planned walk out for this game, and it will be interesting to see what happens. The problem with Old Trafford is so many tourists come to each game, and with plane and travel expenses they aren’t going to walk out in protest. The season ticket holders might though – and even if they had 20% of seats in the stadium empty it would be quite the statement.

There’s no getting away from the fact that this is a very poor Manchester United squad. It’s hard to blame the manager so early into his reign – Ralf Rangnick basically told the truth and the players threw him under the bus. Looking at the distance covered against Brentford, I’m not sure the players are going to play for ten Hag yet. It seems this squad just doesn’t like hard work, or want to work hard for the club. The stats are there for everyone to see to be honest, and it doesn’t paint a good picture for the players.

Of course, all that points to the owners. The lack of investment and the transfer business has been terrible. This summer has been no different. Ralf Rangnick said they need ten new players; they haven’t added anyone exciting. It’s difficult with no Champions League football of course, but it’s a sign of the times that we see Liverpool trading as short as 1.64 to win at Old Trafford. It was this fixture last season that changed the course for Manchester United and sent the UK media into a witch-hunt for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer; the question here is how many goals will Liverpool score rather than will they win?

The gulf in class between these two sides now is incredible. United have so many problems in midfield, it’s hard to see how they stop this Liverpool side playing through them. The 1.64 could be up there with one of the shortest prices Liverpool have been to win a Premier League game at Old Trafford, but I can only see one result here. United just aren’t good enough to cope with this Liverpool side and it will be another difficult evening for United fans. I’m happy to have a Max Bet on Liverpool.
