ASTON VILLA V WOLVES

12.30pm It’s an FA Cup Weekend this week so we only have two Premier League fixtures, one today and one tomorrow. All games are massive for Aston Villa at this stage of the season given their position, but it really is fixtures like this where they need to collect some points. Wolves have returned from lockdown in good form though and it’s going to be a tough afternoon for Villa.

Wolves have won both their fixtures since returning without conceding, and absolutely bossed Bournemouth last time out only conceding an xG of 0.13! They only gave up an xG of 0.43 against West Ham too, and with Villa struggling this season they will certainly find it tough to score here.

Villa found a late goal for a much needed point against Newcastle in their most recent fixture and its fair to say that they have been somewhat unlucky since returning from lockdown. They beat Sheffield United on xG; although their “luck” captured the headlines with the goal not given, they were unlucky to lose against Chelsea and created more than Newcastle for the 1-1 draw.

Games behind closed doors have indeed lost some element of urgency and we will see teams with something to play for perform better. Perhaps the Villa numbers reflect this. However, Wolves are pushing for a Europa League spot and although Chelsea are clear now after beating City; they won’t have fully given up on a Top Four finish. Wolves have an xG of 1.66 away from home and Villa concede an xG of over 2 at home. If this game goes to form, then Wolves win. They have returned in good form and at 1.84 they are very much worth backing to win.
