ASTON VILLA V NEWCASTLE

12.30pm: It’s the first Saturday of the new Premier League season on Betdaq Betting Exchange! We have a fascinating day ahead, Aston Villa v Newcastle should be a cracker to start the day, and then we have Spurs and Manchester City involved later and both trading as odds on favourites. Anyway, as I said we kick start the day with a cracker – Aston Villa come into the game as the favourites at 2.32 with Newcastle 3.2 and the draw is 3.75 at the time of writing. Newcastle start their season under a cloud of negativity with their transfer window going terrible so far – they have basically been outgunned by bigger clubs. Obviously Newcastle fans don’t want to hear this, but the bigger players want to be in London instead of Northern England, and then of course you have the history of the likes of Manchester United to compete against too; even if they have been through a very difficult time of things lately! It will be interesting to see how they start their season – a couple of losses could see things turn quite toxic quite early. They should be good enough to compete for a European spot again though, and they do have Champions League football to enjoy this season.

That’s probably why Newcastle fans have been feeling frustrated are missing out on more players, because they do have that Champions League football. Aston Villa would have been expecting a bid for Ollie Watkins from Manchester United, but those stories appeared to come and go quickly. They opted not to buy Marcus Rashford after his loan last season; it’s going to be interesting how much effort he puts in at Barcelona. These two clubs have a very similar profile; it’s no surprise that they finished last season on the same points in fifth and sixth! There was only 0.11 between the sides on attacking figure last season, and then there was only 0.01 between them on defensive figures. I have to say I was expecting a more open market when I clicked into this game; in my opinion the 2.32 on Villa is a little short given there’s very little between the sides. I respect the fact that they should be favourites given home advantage, but I’d have them a little bigger and I’m happy with a small lay from a value point of view.

TOTTENHAM V BURNLEY

3pm We have three fixtures kicking off at 3pm on the opening Saturday. We will have busier afternoons as the season goes on but obviously we have a lot of TV games over the opening weekend with Friday Night Football and Monday Night Football to enjoy this week! We do have three interesting games, but Spurs hosting Burnley looks the pick of them in my opinion. Obviously it’ll be interesting to see how Sunderland get on against West Ham given you’d expect those two clubs to be involved in the relegation battle in some form – Sunderland are odds on to go down, West Ham you’d fancy to stay up but possibly be under pressure at some stage. Burnley are another club that are odds on for relegation – they are the favourite actually! It looks like it could be another bounce back down straight after coming up if you believe the betting – over the last few seasons we’ve really seen the gulf in class between the Premier League and the Championship with all the money in the top flight. This is a fixture that Spurs will be expected to win, and if we don’t see a home win that will grab most of the headlines this weekend.

As you would expect, Spurs come into the game as the red-hot favourites. The home win is trading 1.41 with Burnley 9.8 and the draw is 5.2 at the time of writing. Spurs had a nice lead into the Premier League season with the UEFA Super Cup on Wednesday night against PSG. Obviously they’ve been through a lot of change with Ange Postecoglou not keeping his job after the Europa League win and then Son leaving for the MLS. They have a re-build to do; that’ll be very interesting to see how the fans deal with this season and what the atmosphere is like around the club. Postecoglou certainly divided opinion. Thomas Frank got off to a great start on Wednesday, they came so close to beating PSG and it ended with heartbreak on penalties. With the massive gulf in class that Burnley have to bridge coming to the Premier League and seeing some very positive things from Spurs on Wednesday night, I can’t see past the home win here and I’m happy to take the 1.41.

WOLVES V MANCHESTER CITY

5.30pm: We finish the first Premier League Saturday of the season with Wolves taking on Manchester City. Very similar to the 3pm game between Spurs and Burnley, this is a game that Manchester City will be fully expected to win and anything bar that will grab the headlines this weekend. We have a similar betting heat too – there’s only seven ticks between the Spurs and City prices. Manchester City are trading 1.56 with Wolves 6.4 and the draw is 4.7 at the time of writing. City have once again spent big in the transfer window, and it will be fascinating to see how they can bounce back after a poor season last time. They come into this season as the third favourites for the title behind Liverpool and Arsenal – I actually would have had them shorter in the Outright market and quite surprised to see them trading as big as 4.8. If they are going to challenge for the title again though, they simply need to win games like this – I know saying things like that is almost mad on the opening weekend, but Wolves are one of the shortest prices for relegation outside of the three newly promoted sides.

Wolves finished down in 16th last season, they were in the bottom six attacking figures. Even though they were very sloppy at the back, their defensive figures actually weren’t that bad – I don’t see them going down this season, but they tend to be under pressure at some point! For all the drama around City last season, their overall figures were very positive. 0.04 behind Liverpool with the best attacking figures, and just 0.01 behind Arsenal with the best defensive figures. They are still an exceptionally strong side, and there’s a huge gulf in class between the sides here. If you asked me which side I’d rather back in the 1.4 range this weekend, it would be City over Spurs that’s for sure. It will be interesting to see how quickly City can get going this season too – in the past they have started a little slowly – Guardiola knows they cannot afford to do that now. I can’t see past a comfortable win for City here, and I’m very happy to take the 1.56. Once again, not going mad with the stakes given it’s the opening weekend.
