SUNDAY COMMUNITY SHIELD: The signal that football is back – the Community Shield – MAN CITY and ARSENAL meet at Wembley on Sunday in the prelude to the new season. Find out The Striker’s recommended BETDAQ bet.

MANCHESTER CITY V ARSENAL

4pm The long summer wait for football is finally over on Sunday as we have the annual curtain raiser to the English season with the Community Shield. Manchester City meet Arsenal in what should be an entertaining affair on BETDAQ Betting Exchange – of course Arsenal take this spot due to finishing second in the Premier League after Manchester City won the Premier League and the FA Cup!

At the moment, Manchester City are odds on to lift the Premier League title again and Arsenal are the clear second favourites. Arsenal are trading around 6.0 with a gap to Liverpool trading 9.0+ so at the moment, if you believe the betting, the title is going to be decided between these two. This is usually a glorified friendly, but when you get a meeting between the two top sides it’s generally the mental side of things which is interesting. For example, a 4-0 win for Manchester City would be quite demoralising for Arsenal to start their season with. I’m sure both sides are thinking along those lines too.

Arsenal would have learned a lot from last season, and it will be very interesting to see can they go toe-to-toe with this City side again. You have to feel they definitely wobbled in the run-in at the important moments – but experience might improve that. City, after winning the treble, could lack a little fire in their belly too. The Champions League was such a big goal for Guardiola at City, and now that box has been ticked.

We should have a very interesting game ahead at Wembley, but from a betting point of view this isn’t really a game for big stakes. This is a game to see do we learn anything about the sides for the season going forward, and taking some value to small stakes. We should have an entertaining game. Manchester City averaged an xG of 2.3 last season in the Premier League while Arsenal averaged 2.0. Both sides were also rock solid at the back. From a performance point of view, it’s hard to fault Arsenal – they just lacked the “bottle” in the big moments last season.

When the sides met in the Premier League last season, it was clear City were head-and-shoulders above Arsenal. Even Sky Sports remarked that the gulf in class between the top two was massive and they were trying to hype the title race at the time! City won 3-1 at Arsenal, while they ran out 4-1 winners at home. Arsenal struggled to create many chances twice, and while we won’t see as high a tempo here it’s hard to see Arsenal working their way through this City side. City are trading around 1.7 at the time of writing and that looks a nice value bet to start the season. Again, nothing too crazy with the staking – it’s great to be back though and hopefully we have another profitable season ahead!
