WEST BROM V LEICESTER
2pm The first Super Sunday of the new Premier League season starts with West Brom hosting Leicester. West Brom came straight up from the Championship without needing the Playoffs, and will be a good opening test for Leicester who finished last season very poorly. I can see a very close game here, and the 2.02 on Leicester looks more than a little short. Of course, West Brom had to hang on at the end of last season too – finishing the last four Championship games without a win! Looking at xG though, they were pretty unlucky not to win their home games.
I feel from a value point of view, laying Leicester at 2.02 is the play here. Their underlining numbers were very poor at the end of last season and it’s not like they had nothing to play for either. They were playing for a Champions League spot. They might be able to outclass this West Brom side who come back up to the Premier League but I fully expect the game to be much closer than odds of 2.02 reflect.

- West Bromwich Albion have lost their last four Premier League home games against Leicester City – their longest ever losing streak at home to the Foxes.
- Leicester City have never won five consecutive away Premier League games against a single opponent, with their four straight wins versus West Brom their joint-best such streak in the competition (also vs Newcastle in January 2020).
- The home side has never won in eight previous Premier League meetings between West Bromwich Albion and Leicester (D2 L6) – only Bournemouth v Watford (10) has been played more in the competition without the home side ever winning.
- West Brom and Leicester City have both lost six times on the opening weekend of a Premier League season, although the Baggies have won their last two such matches and the Foxes are winless in four (D1 L3).
- West Brom have won their opening league match of the season in three of the last four campaigns (L1), having won just twice in their previous 18 (D6 L10).
- Leicester have won their opening Premier League match of the season in just one of their last 11 attempts (D5 L5), though that win came in their title-winning season in 2015-16, (4-2 against Sunderland).

- Leicester have faced newly-promoted sides on the opening day in the top-flight on six previous occasions and won none of those (D3 L3), losing most recently in 2016-17 as reigning champions against Hull City.
- West Brom’s Matheus Pereira assisted 16 league goals in 2019-20, second only to Kevin De Bruyne (20) in England’s top four tiers. The only previous Brazilian to appear for the Baggies in the Premier League was Sandro in 2016 (12 appearances).
- Leicester’s Jamie Vardy has scored in all four of his away Premier League appearances against West Bromwich Albion – the only player in Premier League history to play more away matches against an opponent and score in each match is Ruud van Nistelrooy at Newcastle (scored in all five).
TOTTENHAM V EVERTON
4.30pm The Jose Mourinho shows starts for another season on Sunday afternoon as his Spurs side get their season underway against Everton. I have to say, love him or hate him, Mourinho is box office. You have to watch! He didn’t last long after a bad start to last season with Manchester United, and with a bad start with Spurs who knows what will happen. Given the world situation with Covid19, it’s hard to see any major signings and it won’t be long before that comes out in his post-match press conferences.
Spurs managed to get a Europa League spot last season, but the underlining numbers clearly suggest that Mourinho hasn’t improved them. If they keep playing like they did they won’t be challenging for a Top Four spot again and we could easily see dressing room problems. Everton have added some nice signings and Ancelotti had them playing well last season until lockdown. That didn’t happen after lockdown though, and he will need to get his players focused again. I think Spurs are too short here at 1.93 and the draw looks good value at 3.7. I can see a very close game with little chances in front of goal.

- Tottenham striker Harry Kane has scored nine goals in his last nine Premier League appearances against Everton – he has only scored more top-flight goals against Arsenal (10) and Leicester (14).
