NEWCASTLE V LEICESTER
2.15pm It’s now the first match on Sunday after Burnley v Fulham has been postponed. An interesting game, and one in which Leicester should win. Can they claim the three points though? They lost ground at the top of the table with a 1-1 draw against Crystal Palace on Monday. However, the performance wasn’t bad – they won on xG 1.93 to 0.41 – it was just one of those games. I’ve said similar about Man United this season in the sense that Leicester aren’t playing like title challengers but they are bang there with everyone else dropping points. If they have any hope of actually lifting the title, they simply have to win games like this. Newcastle have improved from last season, but they are still a poor side.
Newcastle did manage to hold Liverpool to a 0-0 draw here on Wednesday however, keeping Liverpool down to an xG of 1.47. Liverpool fans will say they were unlucky not to score, and they are right. Leicester have been playing some good football recently, and we know that Newcastle give up a lot of chances – if Leicester play their normal attacking game then this should be a straightforward win for them. I wouldn’t go mad about it, but the 1.7 is worth backing and including in any BETDAQ Multiples today.

MATCH STATS
- Newcastle have lost seven of their last nine Premier League meetings with Leicester (W2), losing both against the Foxes in 2019-20 by an aggregate score of 0-8.
- Leicester have won their last four Premier League away games against Newcastle, keeping three clean sheets in this run. Only at West Brom (5) have they won more consecutive away games in the competition.
- Newcastle have lost their first league game in six of the last eight calendar years (W1 D1), including a 0-3 home defeat to Leicester in their first game of 2020.
- Leicester haven’t lost their first league game in any of the last 12 calendar years (W8 D4), since losing 1-3 at QPR in 2008. The Foxes have kept a clean sheet in each of their last five such games, winning the last three in a row.
- Newcastle United won their last Premier League game played on Sunday, beating Everton 2-1 in November – the Magpies haven’t won consecutive Sunday games in the competition since a run of three in May 2018 (winning vs Man Utd, Arsenal and Chelsea).
- After drawing none of their last 18 Premier League games, Leicester’s last two in the competition have ended level with the Foxes coming from behind both times.
- Newcastle manager Steve Bruce hasn’t won any of his seven home meetings with Leicester in all competitions (D4 L3) – the Foxes are the only side he’s faced more than twice at home without ever winning in his managerial career.
- Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has been involved in six goals in his last seven Premier League games against Newcastle, scoring five and assisting one. His two strikes at St James’ Park have been the opening goal of the game.
- Ryan Fraser is one of three current Newcastle players to have scored at least twice in their career against Leicester in the Premier League (also Andy Carroll and Callum Wilson), while the winger has had a hand in four goals in his last three appearances against the Foxes (two goals, two assists).
- Leicester’s Harvey Barnes has scored eight goals in 21 appearances in all competitions this season, one more than he did in 42 games last term. Only in 2018-19 (10) has the midfielder netted more goals in all competitions across a single campaign.
CHELSEA V MANCHESTER CITY
4.30pm The highlight of the weekend, and so many talking points. As I type now there is a doubt of the game actually going ahead. Five of Man City’s players are self-isolating because of Covid19 after their game against Everton was postponed. Guardiola confirmed Kyle Walker and Gabriel Jesus had tested positive on Christmas Day. To add even more uncertainly, Lampard said two backroom staff had also tested positive but that the plan was for the game to go ahead. As we have seen the games get postponed very late, which is fine considering there is no traveling fans. I have to say, it all makes for a fascinating clash especially considering the position of both sides in the table.
With Liverpool dropping points, two wins for City in their games in hand would put them one point behind Liverpool which is remarkable given the disappointing results they have already had. Chelsea started the season brightly, but they have fallen away with losses against Everton, Wolves and Arsenal including a draw against Aston Villa on Monday. Lampard needs a win to steady the ship and get them back into the mix. You’d have to say given the Covid19 situation at City, this is an excellent chance for Chelsea to win. City haven’t been themselves this season – they haven’t created the same volume of chances and they have conceded too many goals. I think this is a good time to back Chelsea at 3.25 on BETDAQ Betting Exchange which looks too big in what should be a very close game. I might regret not laying City instead, but I’m happy to take a chance on Chelsea.
