SUNDAY PREMIER LEAGUE: The Striker previews Sunday’s two Premier League games with recommended BETDAQ bets. It’s NEWCASTLE v WEST HAM at 2pm and match of the weekend TOTTENHAM v MAN CITY at 4.30pm.
NEWCASTLE V WEST HAM
2pm It’s the first Super Sunday of the new Premier League! We have two fascinating games today, and we also have two fascinating markets on BETDAQ Betting Exchange. All eyes will be on Spurs v Man City later, but we start the day with Newcastle hosting West Ham. After hanging around the bottom of the table for most of last season, and indeed looking like Fulham could catch them at one point, Newcastle actually finished the season very strongly to end up in 12th. It’s fair to say that position highly flattered them, and the xG table put them in 15th. I can see a very similar season to last year for them to be honest – they’ll hang around the bottom but ultimately stay up comfortably – it seems to be a repeat process for Newcastle these days!
West Ham had their best season for many years last season and were real Top Four contenders at one stage. They dropped their form right at the wrong moment however, and it was actually this fixture that started their fall. They had to play Chelsea in their next fixture but they had some terrible errors and lost 3-2 to Newcastle before losing to Chelsea – their Top Four hopes were gone then. To finish 6th was still an incredible success, and I feel they can get off to a winning start here. They were one of my favourite sides to back last season because they offered a lot of value and the 2.28 is very much worth backing here. Even though they gave away two goals and got a player sent off against Newcastle here towards the end of last season, they actually battled back to 2-2 before losing 3-2 in the end. The performance wasn’t bad, and they can get three points here.

TOTTENHAM V MANCHESTER CITY
4.30pm The Premier League have saved the best until last for the opening weekend as Spurs host the Champions Manchester City. One wonders how Harry Kane must be feeling going into this fixture. He’s just watched Jack Grealish go to City for a massive fee – can City afford another massive fee for Harry Kane? They can afford it; but can they squeeze it into the financial fair play structure, that’s the big question. At the moment, I would suggest it looks 50/50 as to whether Kane ends up at City. That would obviously leave Spurs in a terrible situation. They have had an awful time trying to get a manager after Jose Mourinho, fell out of the Top Six last season and with Kane they wouldn’t get back into the Champions League for quite some time. They have a fancy new stadium, but without Kane they would be a mid-table side.
Manchester City started their season with a loss in the Community Shield, but as I noted in my preview of that game they probably weren’t that bothered. It was a nice pre-season friendly for them, and they will want to set down a marker for the season with a win here. I have to say, their price at 1.65 is very appealing. Spurs were woeful last season, and they seem to have countless issues at the club at the moment – that’s even leaving out the Harry Kane situation too! City were by far and away the best side in the Premier League last season and they have made their squad stronger too. They are my bet to win the title this season in my Outright preview, but they are also my best bet of the weekend at 1.65 today.
