5.30pm I noted last night how the fixture list throws up some excellent fixtures back-to-back, and while tonight isn’t quite the same as seeing Brighton v Manchester United after all the drama in the Premier League at the weekend – we do have history! It was only a couple of months ago these two sides did battle in the Championship Playoff Final when Fulham came out on top after extra time. Since then Brentford have had bigger clubs bidding for their players while Fulham have enjoyed the riches that come with the Premier League.
It’ll be very interesting to see what Fulham do here with their starting XI. They have really struggled in the Premier League so far, and I’d be tempting to play your best XI because the International Break comes up after the weekend. Brentford have only managed one win from their three Championship games this season, and they look a little short here at 2.54 in what should be another very close game between these two.

- Brentford have lost just one of their last six meetings with Fulham in all competitions (W3 D2), losing 1-2 in the Championship play-off final in August.
- Brentford have progressed from two of their three League Cup ties against Fulham, doing so in the first round in both 1988-89 and 1992-93. However, they did lose the last such meeting 0-1 in August 2014.
- Brentford are looking to reach the League Cup quarter-final for the first time – their two previous fourth round appearances saw them eliminated in 1982-83 and 2010-11.
- Fulham haven’t reached the League Cup quarter-final since the 2004-05 campaign, with this just their fourth appearance in the fourth round since then.
- Brentford have seen off Premier League opponents in rounds two and three so far – the Bees had only progressed from two of their previous 22 League Cup ties against top-flight opposition before this season.
LIVERPOOL V ARSENAL
7.45pm This is another fixture we seen from the last Premier League Matchday. Liverpool ran out very deserved 3-1 winners with xG reflecting the final result. Klopp actually came out and said he wasn’t happy with his side that they didn’t kill off the game sooner! That outlook is what made them Champions, and at the same time Klopp doesn’t play his stars in the Cup so we can expect a lot of changes here. Arsenal are unlikely to play their best XI either, although they should considering they have little chance of winning anything else bar a domestic Cup this season.
It’s difficult to commit to a match odds bet given the situation with who plays. Before seeing the teams, I would suggest Liverpool look a little short at 2.08 given the expected changes. We landed a max bet on them to win at the weekend, but I feel Arsenal will name the stronger XI tonight. That being said, over 2.5 goals catches my eye at 1.65 here compared to anything in the match odds market. These two sides always play an open and entertaining game when they meet and I’m surprised to see overs as big as 1.65.

- Liverpool’s last three League Cup matches have seen 24 goals scored (12 both for and against) with 90 shots attempted across the three games. At least one side has scored five goals in each of their last three matches in the competition, with only Chester City between 1964 and 1966 having at least one team score five goals in four consecutive League Cup fixtures.
- Arsenal have progressed from 14 of their last 17 League Cup fourth round ties, though they were eliminated at this stage of the competition by Liverpool last season, losing on penalties after a 5-5 draw.
- Liverpool’s Divock Origi has scored nine goals in his last seven starts in the League Cup, including a brace against Arsenal in last season’s fourth round. If he scores, Origi will be the ninth Liverpool player to score 10 goals for the club in the League Cup and the first to reach that milestone since Danny Murphy in October 2003.
