BRENTFORD V FULHAM
7.45pm To say that this is a massive game is an understatement. The riches that being in the Premier League bring these days make this one of football’s biggest fixtures. Ironically not many choose to big it up! Wembley host the Championship Playoff Final on the unusual time of Tuesday night, but hey it’s been an unusual year. It promises to be a cracking game and I’m looking forward to it.
Both sides had very different journeys here in the semi-finals. Fulham looked to have their tie close to wrapped up with a 2-0 win away from home in the first leg only to be hanging onto their lead nervously in the second leg. While Brentofrd lost their first leg 1-0 and blew Swansea away in the second leg with home advantage winning 3-1.
Looking at xG over the season, Brentford are rightfully favourites here. Their numbers put them as the second best team in the Championship while Fulham only come in fifth. Brentford have more or less performed in lined with xG, while Fulham have conceded ten less than they should. I feel it’s the Fulham defence that will be the game changer here.
Even with a two goal lead and home advantage in the second leg, Fulham struggled at the back and while Brentford started the playoffs slowly and also came into the playoffs off the back of two losses – their second leg win should give them the confidence to attack here. It’s difficult to go all-out attack in a game so big; we usually get cagey starts, but Brentford must attack this Fulham side as they are clearly vulnerable at the back. Brentford are worth backing for me at 2.16 to outscore this Fulham side in a tight game.
