8pm The focus on Wednesday night in the Carabao Cup Third Round is an all Premier League clash on BETDAQ Betting Exchange as Liverpool host West Ham. These two sides had very difficult weekends with Liverpool getting back to winning ways against Bournemouth after their shock loss to Nottingham Forest the weekend before – while for West Ham they were comfortably beaten by Chelsea. That loss has left them with four points from five games, and some of the fanbase are how question whether or not sacking David Moyes was the right idea. Let’s be honest here; they are very likely to exit this tournament here too, which is only going to add fuel to the fire.
Liverpool come into the game as the red-hot favourites – Arne Slot’s men are trading 1.34 with West Ham 9.8 and the draw is 6.0 at the time of writing. Long-term readers will know that I’ve highlighted a lot of red flags in the West Ham performance levels for a while now. They finished last season with an average xG conceded of 1.85 which was the second worst defensive figure in the Premier League – only Sheffield United conceded more chances. Their average xG created was pretty average a 1.3 – in the bottom six attacking figures – but they massively over-performed going forward and that kept them in the top half of the table.
The clip of David Moyes saying the club has never been more successful as with him as gone viral – in that he said they might have had more entertaining managers but ones who win less. West Ham definitely made the decision to part ways based on the defensive figures – football is so data driven these days it’s obvious the people who make the decisions know all the facts and stats. They have started this season conceding plenty of chances too however, and now they face one of the best attacking sides in Europe. Liverpool actually finished with a better attacking figure than Manchester City last season.
I really can’t see past a comfortable win for Liverpool here given the way the sides have been playing. My only worry with Liverpool is will Arne Slot decide to rest a number of players – obviously the Champions League sides have a hectic fixture list, and this tournament is a good chance to rest players. With that in mind, I would suggest to keep stakes low in the Cup for the time being. There’s no prizes for tipping 1.34 shots, and I wouldn’t do that – but I would include Liverpool in any midweek acca this week. I also feel that they can cover the handicap, and I’m very happy to take the 1.5 goal handicap option at 1.9.
