LA LIGA: The Ultra previews the start of the new La Liga season as Girona host Rayo Vallecano for Friday Night Football with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

6pm: The new La Liga season begins with Friday Night Football on Betdaq Betting Exchange! La Liga will be the full focus in Europe this weekend given Serie A and the Bundesliga are due to start a little later. While we might not have the most glamorous start to the weekend, we do have an interesting market as Girona host Rayo Vallecano. It feels like a lifetime ago that Girona were having the season of their lives in 2023/24 to finish third – they might have over-performed but their fans got to experience their best season ever and won’t care about under-lining numbers. They were brought back down to earth last season though.
Girona dropped down to 16th, only one point away from the relegation zone in the end which is remarkable really. We are used to seeing those up-and-down movements in the Bundesliga, but not really in La Liga! For comparison, Girona finished the 2023/24 season with an average xG created of 1.37 but their actual goals scored was 2.24. That’s quite a difference so it’s was always likely they’d drop out of the European spots in 2024/25 – they were actually very poor in front of goal last season though. Their average xG created was only 1.16. Rayo Vallecano will fancy their chances here – they actually finished last season inside the top five for chances created.
We have an open betting heat – Girona come into the game as the favourites at 2.44 with Rayo Vallecano 3.35 and the draw the same price at 3.35 at the time of writing. I have to say there aren’t many positives for backing Girona in my opinion – the main one is that they have home advantage and over the past two seasons, they have been much better at home compared to away. However, Rayo Vallecano were a much stronger side last season and managed to get into the Europa Conference League with a very strong finish.
I know we have an open betting heat here, but I would actually have the market even more open. I’d have Girona bigger, and then the draw and Rayo Vallecano a little shorter. It’s the opening weekend so I’m happy to keep stakes low, but I’m very happy to lay Girona at 2.44 from a value point of view. I expect a closer game than the odds suggest.
