We had a huge few days from Europe with Napoli and Inter Milan clashing in Serie A while we had undoubtedly the highlight of the weekend with El Clasico on Sunday! Unfortunately for Atletico, Real Madrid and Barcelona have been miles ahead this season, and you’d already rule out Atletico from the title race.
They had a lacklustre start to the season, and even with a 5-2 win at home over Real Madrid they still found themselves eight points behind them at the top of the table. They were hammered 4-0 last week away to Arsenal in the Champions League, and it’s fair to say that Diego Simeone is going through a little rough patch with his side. They still have the third best attacking figure in La Liga; but their average xG created is 1.64 compared to 2.39 from Barcelona – that’s quite a gap! Simeone still had Atletico rock solid at the back though; their average xG conceded is only 1.05 and only Barcelona have a better defensive figure this season in La Liga.
We have an interesting betting heat; Atletico Madrid come into the game as the favourites at 2.24 with Real Betis 3.35 and the draw is 3.75 at the time of writing. Real Betis are your classic Europa League side from La Liga – they are just short of top four/five quality but consistent enough to always battle for the other European spots. There was an opportunity for them to take that fourth spot when Sevilla were dropping off, especially given they looked so strong with a Copa del Rey win too, but they just couldn’t bridge that gap – they were ten points off the top five last season.
Their attacking figure is only 0.07 behind Atletico Madrid though, and although they have conceded more chances, we know they are solid at home. It’s no surprise that Atletico aren’t trading odds on here to be honest. The 2.24 doesn’t make much appeal on Atletico given they have struggled to put sides away this season – both sides come into the game on the same points and there has been very little between them on under-lining numbers. With Real Betis having home advantage, I feel they can get a result here and from a value point of view to lay Atletico.
