WEDNESDAY SPANISH SUPER CUP: The Ultra previews ATHLETIC BILBAO v BARCELONA with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
ATHLETIC BILBAO V BARCELONA
7pm We’re back in Saudi Arabia, this time for the Spanish Super Cup on BETDAQ BETTING EXCHANGE as we kick off with Athletic Bilbao and Barcelona on Wednesday. Saudi Arabia host the Italian Super Cup over the last few days, and now we basically have the same format with La Liga teams. The Spanish Super Cup was changed to a four team format in 2020, and it’s been hosted in Saudi Arabia every year bar 2021. Obviously this situation has faced a lot of criticism, but let’s be honest – money talks in football these days.
We had a very high scoring Spanish Super Cup last year, so hopefully we see plenty of action in front of goal again. Barcelona and Real Madrid will be expected to meet in the Final – especially Real Madrid given they meet Mallorca on Thursday. Barcelona definitely face a tricky test here though, and they went into the La Liga Christmas break in a mini-crisis too given their run of results. Barcelona come into this clash as the odds on favourites at 1.87 with Athletic Bilbao 4.2 and the draw is 4.1 at the time of writing.
It’s been a remarkable turnaround at the top of the La Liga table – I know Real Madrid had a game in hand but Barcelona had a nine point lead at one stage before their loss to Real Sociedad back in November. That started a run of just one win from seven La Liga games. They haven’t had a difficult fixture list either – they’ve dropped points against the likes of Celta Vigo, Las Palmas, Real Betis and Leganes. They’ve been going off very short prices too – at home to Las Palmas and Leganes they were sub 1.2; you could call those losses the shocks of the season! After having a nine point lead, they are now five points behind Real Madrid having played the same amount of games.
Hansi Flick was probably delighted to see the Christmas break and allow his side time to reset. Athletic Bilbao will see this as an excellent chance to extend Barcelona’s poor run; Bilbao are always an interesting side because their performance levels are so strong at home yet so average away from home. It’s actually hard to know what type of performance to expect here in a neutral venue. Bilbao are having a great season – they sit in fourth at the moment and you’d have to say that fourth spot is definitely open this season with Sevilla and Girona mid-table sides now.
Looking at the under-lining numbers, Barcelona are clearly playing much better football compared to Bilbao this season. However, they just haven’t been getting results lately – there’s only two points between them in La Liga. I do feel that the 1.87 looks a little short on Barcelona here, you would also lean towards Unders in a tight game but we saw loads of goals last season. Perhaps sides a little lacklustre in focus given the tournament is in Saudi Arabia. Overs is trading odds on, and I’m happy to stay out of the goals market. I feel we’ll see a close game here, and the draw is worth backing for a small investment at 4.1.
