It’s fair to say that most football fans will be expecting Barcelona to progress here; Athletic Bilbao have struggled this season and currently sit in mid-table in La Liga. More dropped points at the weekend meant they are getting a little adrift now from the European spots – after reaching the highs of Champions League football and a Copa del Rey win, they are facing a low this season! It’s no surprise to see Barcelona come into the game as the odds on favourites at 1.51 with Athletic Bilbao 6.6 and the draw is 5.0 at the time of writing.
Everything is going smoothly for Barcelona at the moment. They have a four point lead at the top of La Liga over their big rivals Real Madrid; they also have the best attacking figure and the best defensive figure in La Liga. There’s no arguing that they have been the best side in Spain this season – obviously there’s plenty of time for drama yet though! Athletic Bilbao have played better than their position in the table – they have the sixth best attacking figure and the second best defensive figure.
Why are they sitting down in tenth then, already 14 points off the top four you might ask. They have been massively under-performing at both ends of the pitch. Their average xG created is 1.52 but they’ve scored less than a goal a game on average – they’ve left a huge amount of points on the table there. Not only that, but they are conceding more than they should too. I know Bilbao have clearly struggled to get results in games this season, but those performance levels would put me off taking the 1.51 on Barcelona here.
We have the best two defensive sides in La Liga here, and you might be interested in Under 2.5 goals at 2.64. This tournament has been known for high scoring affairs which would make me reduce stakes here a little – however, in their last two Semi-Finals Under 2.5 goals has collected with Barcelona involved. Then we saw carnage in the Final! I’m happy with a small position on Unders here at the odds; Bilbao will set up to defend and Barcelona will have to grind out a win.
