The William Hill Greyhound Derby takes centre stage on Saturday night, live on Sky, when new names will be carved on the trophy.
In the Derby the 9.08 Trap 4 Mind the Net sets the standard but it’s not a given that his style of running will suit the Plough Lane venue.
He was runner up in the Scottish Derby final when going off the front.
Will a dog that has been making the running in Scotland be able to get to the front early or at all?
To the halfway sectionals most of these dogs will be looking for position A and there wont be too much between them.
At around 2.0 I can see it going wrong for the ‘jolly’.
As a sporting/value alternative I would give Trap 6 Farloe Trent a squeak at around 10 or 11.0.
He’s not had the ideal preparation. He was shaping up for a tilt at the Arc in Swindon when injury struck(had a tendon removed). He entered the Derby with only sprint trials and his fitness has improved as he has progressed through the Derby heats. Now in his favoured Trap 6 and if timing the start right I can see him leading to halfway, if so, the forecast price would look attractive. Stamina is not in abundance so he would also need things to go right behind him!
It would be great to see a character like Rab McNair have a bit of success live on SKY.
In the first live Sky race at 7.08 I like Trap 6 Cluxtons Free who is well drawn at around 4.0, he could capitalise on early crowding as 2 and 3 are drawn for early trouble so 6 can exploit this with a ‘bingo break’.
In the 7.22 all eyes will be on Trap 6 Holdem Spy who was ‘desperately unlucky’ to be out of the Derby. He will go off short and his style of running is not for the faint hearted, bar a calamity it will win.
The 7.38 Trap 2 Farley Chicken will be making his anticipated 6 bend debut i would rather stick with the proven form of Trap 6 Romantic Rambo.
The 7.57 is the 4 bend Derby invitation Trap 6 Aero Nemesis at odds on has had a week to recharge his battery and normal service should resume. The antepost ‘Derby jolly’ should return to winning ways be prepared to back Aero at around 1.6.
In the 8.12 Trap 5 Old Refrain will improve for its latest start where I think a lack of a recent run beat him. Trap 4 Musical GaGa last appeared Nov’13 when beaten over 8 lengths in the Leger final, his wellbeing has to be taken on trust.
The 8.28
PASS
My Greyhound NH knowledge aint what it used to be!!
The 8.43 could be decided late on as early pace up front may not be the place to be!
I like Trap 2 Jaytee Seville and Trap 4 Benkaat Nero against the field. I think the others could get ‘hooked up and cuddling’ early leaving the door open for these late finishers at prices around 4.5 and 16.0.
