VERY VERY CLOSE: SHAMROCK came so close to landing his second 5/1 WINNING NAP in a row yesterday when Shutter Island was narrowly beaten in the opener.
It would have been a fortunate winner, again, but having landed a 5/1 winning nap on Sunday I came frustratingly close at Wexford yesterday in the opener with Shutter Island who finished like a rocket to be beaten half a length. There was plenty of trouble at the final flight so he would have been lucky to have won – but they all count !!
No Irish racing today so some Grand National news…
On His Own is unlikely to run in the Crabbie’s Grand National at Aintree on April 5.
The Willie Mullins-trained 10-year-old finished second in last week’s Gold Cup to Lord Windermere , beaten just a short head, and also had sound claims of getting the race in the stewards room.
Owner Graham Wylie has, rather sportingly in my opinion, decided not to appeal and instead is focussed on the Punchestown Gold Cup rather than Aintree.
Mullins told the Irish Times: “He had a very hard race in the Gold Cup and I think Punchestown is the place to go with him.
