BIG WEEKEND OF RACING: Be sure to catch DAQMAN’s preview of a huge weekend of racing including the English and Irish Leger and the Irish Champion Stakes tomorrow.
TIS MARVELLOUS RACING AT DONCASTER
2.30 Doncaster Tis Marvellous stands way ahead of these of form and an early price of 4.0 on BETDAQ looks an absolute steal. An impressive winner of the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte he was by no means disgraced finishing 3 ¾ lengths behind Lady Aurelia in the Prix Mornay last time. Back into Group 2 company now he has an outstanding chance of getting his head in front and is an early banker at Doncaster.
3.05 Doncaster A really good time of the year for three-year-olds in handicaps as they are maturing physically yet still get a healthy weight allowance from their older rivals. The three-year-old allowance can be put to good use again today by the improving Wall Of Fire for Hugo Palmer. An impressive winner on his first try over this trip at York he looks to have the scope to go in again. Hugo Palmer’s last 5 results read; 01122 which is good by most standards and 3lb claimer Josephine Gordon has proved herself more than capable this season.
3.40 Doncaster This race has lost some of its quality with the defection of Ascot Gold Cup second, Mizzou but still remains a race of some intrigue. The key question is whether Quest For More will be challenged for the lead or will he get another ‘freebie’ like he did at York? If he is let off again he will be very tough to beat but it is likely that George Baker will be a marked man this afternoon and will not get things his own way. If that is the case, Sheikhzayedroad must have strong claims on this drying ground. He ran a stormer in both the Gold Cup and Goodwood Cup and his hold up style might allow him to hold his form better than most. But best to cover both eventualities though, so a stake saving bet of Quest For More is suggested.
4.15 Doncaster Charlie Appleby already has a very smart two-year-old on his hands with Blue Point and Salsabeel has plenty of potential after a debut win despite running very green. He beat two subsequent maiden winners that day and the courage he showed to go between rivals on his debut was impressive. He clearly has a big engine and could be another smart prospect for the boys in blue.
HIDDEN GEM AT DOWN ROYAL
5.05 Down Royal An open looking maiden where Mabrouka can step forward from a promising debut run and hit the mark. She was slowly away at Roscommon before staying on steadily in the straight to take third. Mick Halford’s two-year-olds usually improve significantly for their debut run and an early show of 8.4 seems too big.
7.05 Down Royal A huge weekend coming up for the Weld/Smullen combination and they can start the weekend on a high here with their grand old servant Hidden Universe. Once upon a time a very smart 92 rated handicapper, he has had plenty of injury problems since then. He has now slipped down to a mark of 75 but showed the first glimmer of form in a while at Galway on Monday. Held up in rear by his very inexperienced apprentice rider he made steady progress up the straight and was never nearer than at the line. He is reunited with Champion Jockey Pat Smullen now and under his power packed drive a return to the winner’s enclosure could be on the cards.
GOOD CRAIC ON A FRIDAY AT SANDOWN
2.55 Sandown Good Craic managed to find a red-hot maiden for debut at Newbury and ran better than his finishing position suggests. He has been given a 71 day break and steps up two furlongs in trip and could be poised to produce a much better finish. He is an attractive proposition at an early show of 4.5.
4.40 Sandown Cloudberry was still showing signs of inexperience when winning on his handicap debut last time and he comes here unpenalised for that win. 7lb claimer David Egan again takes the ride and he should be comfortably good enough to make it three in a row.
