LISTOWEL NAP: SHAMROCK’s NAP on Monday runs at Listowel on the second day of theit Harvest Festival. He also looks back on a day of shocks at the Curragh on Sunday.
It was a day of shocks at the Curragh yesterday – notably with the defeat of Order Of St George who couldn’t get on terms with the front running Wicklow Brave who could be bound for the Melbourne Cup next.
The nap, Rhododendron, finished third but I had a little compensation on the day with Churchill, next best, winning the Goffs Vincent O’Brien National Stakes and now heading the market for the QIPICO 2000 Guineas after this smooth four and a quarter length success.
The results were a little more fathomable at Listowel yesterday with four winning favourites on the opening day of their Harvest Festival meeting.
Racing continues at Listowel today and my best bet comes in the mares maiden hurdle at 4.40.
The testing ground should suit the Noel Meade trained She’s A Star who was quite impressive on testing ground at Down Royal on debut when winning a bumper by five lengths.
She was disappointing next time out in better company at Naas but has been given a decent break since then and is worth a chance in a race as weak as this.
Wilms Warrior finished second in a maiden hurdle at Ballinrobe before disappointing when back on the flat. Her form just about sets the standard but she has yet to be tried on ground as testing as this. At short odds I don’t want to take the chance.
