Manchester United have it all to do if they are to reach the Europa League quarter-finals after a disappointing performance at home to Athletico Bilbao. Sir Alex Ferguson commented that Bilbao’s display was the best he’s seen since the Champions League final against Barcelona.
The Red Devils will have been confident of taking a lead into the second leg given Bilbao’s recent concerns on the road, but they don’t have the same issues at San Mames. On Sunday United reclaimed top spot from their rivals on the back of some scintillating league form. Sir Alex will be frustrated that his side have not carried that form into Europe as his side have won only three times on the continent this season.
Although Bilbao lost on the weekend to Osasuna, their dominant display in Manchester means they will hold no fear against the Red Devils. Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won four of their past six home league fixtures and have conceded only five times during that period. Bilbao last lost a game at San Mames at the end of November – a run stretching 12 matches.
The first leg was an open affair and Bilbao have bagged 14 goals in their past six La Liga games, while United have managed the same total in their last six league outings. Having taken top spot in the Premier League, United may now focus on domestic matters and Bilbao’s home form means backing them at 2.83 on BETDAQ is the way to go..
