IRISH CHASER OF TWO HAT-TRICKS
Third time lucky? I’m planning to add an Irish horse to my Fortune Cookies, if he can land his hat-trick at Cheltenham this weekend.
I might even be able to name his 2023 target as the Albert Bartlett, which has long been a target for his Co Meath trainer, John McConnell.
McConnell won the opening novice hurdle at Cheltenham this coming Saturday with Streets Of Doyen (2020) and followed up in the same race last year with Bardenstown Lad (2021). Both finished third in the Albert Bartlett.
Now John wants hat-trick-seeker Rexem to land the stable’s own hat-trick in the Saturday heat and then change his Albert Bartlett luck.
The five-year-old’s own hat-trick is at stake at the weekend after success at Downpatrick (clear run-in) and Killarney (easily) in 22f and 23f hurdles in August.
Rexem, by Leading Light out of a Definite Article mare, is a strong stayer who can quicken off a good gallop.
McConnell, who landed 31 winners in Britain in five seasons, has also won the two-mile hurdle on Saturday (2.40), which back in 2014 went to a certain Tiger Roll.
McConnell may run Innatendue and later on ask another top hurdles novice, Mahler Mission, to make his fencing debut in the novices chase with all the allowances.
11.5 OFFERS SKELTON DARK HORSE
⭕ 1.47 Fontwell Staying with the Jumps, we have Dan Skelton in fabulous form: somewhere among his nine runners across-the-cards at Fontwell and Worcester today, there could be two or three winners.
He’s on a four-timer this week and his last nine runners have finished 220233111, all under Harry Skelton, and the family affair can continue today with dark-horse William of York.
The six-year-old should be a decent price after a long break from a bumper which was never going to show his true colours.
He’s from staying blood (by Kayf Tara) and is straight up to 2m 3f for today’s hurdles debut.
Lays Logic suggests the Nicky Henderson runner is suspect: Time Flies By has been beaten favourite in three of his last four hurdles. Icare Grandchamp is the saver but probably needs plenty of rain.

ASHKY LOVES NEWMARKET TRACKS
⭕ 4.10 Newmarket Today’s Newmarket card has four novice stakes races, two nurseries and a maiden. That makes even this handicap a better betting race, even though it’s for fillies.
I have never been an Ed Dunlop fan, so I’ve missed his 8-28 in the last 10 days. He drew a blank at Newmarket before that and has a poor overall strike rate there of 7%.
With the Dunlop tyre sure to deflate about now, I won’t be backing Pontefract class-5 winner, My Silent Song in this class-2, though a three-year-old usually wins it.
William Haggas has taken it it twice in the last five years with second-season animals, but Queenlet didn’t beat very much to earn her penalty at Musselburgh and was defeated at Newmarket before that.
Haggas’s archrival, Charlie Appleby, saddles Light Of Peace, turned over at odds-on on the July Course in a class 4; in fact, beaten favourite in all her three starts, and Lays Logic warns me to swerve her again.
Nigwa won a class-5 maiden at Ripon and needs big improvement, while the form book says that Poet’s Lady can be backed only with plenty of rain.
So I’m riding with Ryan Moore and Ashky, who has won three times (one here) across both Newmarket tracks.
Ashky would like a fast-run race over the mile but, if there isn’t a pace on, the grey filly can lead early and lead again when others have played their cards, as she did here the last day.
The overnight punt was Dont Tell Claire, who has dropped to her winning mark of last autumn at Ascot (when a 14-1 scorer).

UNLUCKY ODISSEO GETS HIS TURN
⭕ 7.30 Kempton You shouldn’t chase your losses but Odisseo was a nose near-miss for me at 12-1 last week when I had a painful attack of seconditis. He’s 4-8 on AW and a CD winner here at Kempton.
In fact, there are five CD winners in this but you’d expect the three-year-olds to prevail, as last year.
They’ve tried a hood and now a tongue-tie on Consensus De Vega, while Dayman keeps the hood on, despite two poor efforts.
Dynamic Talent has had three AW wins this year but was beaten favourite behind Odisseo the last day.
Mount Athos has been missing since he won at Thirsk and switches to AW under James Doyle with some Lays Logic that trainer Tate has had 10 consecutive losers, missing strike badly with three short-priced, including 4-5 and 11-10 beaten favourites in the last two weeks.
