SHUNTER AND CHUTE FORECAST
⭕ 2.30 Curragh (Loughbrown Stakes) Almost a year-on-year battle for this Group 3 between Dermot Weld (4 wins) and Aidan O’Brien (3) in the decade.
Despite the duel between two top yards, the draw seems to have its say: delete 2020, and for the remaining eight years since 2016, the winner by stall has been 2, 3, 3, 3, 1, 3, 1, 2.
It just so happens, two heavy-ground horses are drawn in 1 and 2 today: Chally Chute and the 12-year-old evergreen The Shunter. Both bring Cesarewitch form to the race but were wide apart in the BETDAQ market this morning, providing a one-two of 2.12 and 22.0.
Listed winner Chally Chute was unlucky runner-up in the Irish Cesarewitch the last day; The Shunter won the 2023 Newmarket Cesarewitch and was hampered or short of room three times in the final three furlongs of this year’s race.
It takes a stretch of the imagination to play Dermot Weld’s Duraji and, though drawn 3, Aidan O’Brien’s Two For Joy has to step up from a modest maiden and leave behind failure to get a lift from first of all blinkers then cheekpieces.
CORK OUT FOR THE CHAMPAGNE
⭕ 3.20 Cork Grand National Cork trainer Robert Tyner is in form, having won the prestigious Clonmel Oil Chase 10 days back.
His 12-year-old Big Debates won a veterans’ chase last December and was back to form over hurdles in late September for 7lb-claiming Anna McGuinness. BETDAQ 9.8 taken.
Willie Mullins’ A Penny A Hundred is just 1-9 over fences and stablemate Chosen Witness still a maiden chaser after five starts. But that won’t stop the stable punters celebrating yesterday’s Diamond day at Del Mar.
From The Ashes was third over nearly 4m at Punchestown and third again over this shorter trip in the Windsor Stayers Chase.
