PREVIEW

Tottenham Hotspur seemed in pole position to grab third place and, with it, a lucrative Champions League qualifying spot towards the end of last season, before a massive form slump saw them surrender third to Arsenal. Spurs then watched in agony as London rivals Chelsea secured the European Cup and took the last Champions League spot from their grasp.

They have the Europa League as some sort of consolation and new manager Andre Villa-Boas won this competition with Porto back in 2011. The Portuguese has praised Hugo Lloris ahead of the goalkeeper’s expected Tottenham debut and is adamant Spurs will take the competition seriously.

They take on Lazio tonight, who have a 100% record from their three opening games in Serie A. Miroslav Klose, Mauri, and Hernanes can cause problems for any teams so Tottenham shouldn’t take the challenge lightly.

The two sides have never met before but Tottenham are unbeaten in three games at home to Italian sides in Europe, even if they have won just two of their last five games overall at home in Europe.

Last season Lazio made it past the group stage of the Europa League, the first time they had made it out of a European group stage in seven attempts, but they look a stronger outfit this year and both teams would surely settle for a draw at this stage.
