SUNDAY IPL: The Edge previews Mumbai Indians v Kolkata Knight Riders with a recommended BETDAQ bet.
Mumbai Indians v Kolkata Knight Riders
MATCH OVERVIEW:
The IPL 2026 season is underway, and it gets into its stride on Sunday as Mumbai Indians host Kolkata Knight Riders at the iconic Wankhede Stadium. This should be a cracker on Betdaq Betting Exchange between two massive franchises. It will be fascinating to see how they both start here – Mumbai Indians have been struggling lately. Despite being one of the most successful sides in IPL history, they finished stone last in 2024 and 2022. Last season they qualified for the playoffs which was a step forward – the five-time champions are chasing that elusive sixth title after their longest drought since winning began. The general feeling this season is that they have assembled arguably their most complete squad in years – let’s see is that true!
Rohit Sharma will obviously play a big role – Mahela Jayawardene has been clear that he wants his senior statesman more actively involved throughout which is interesting. The return of Quinton de Kock at base price looks good business; obviously Jasprit Bumrah is one of the best bowlers in the world too. Himself and Trent Boult back together. That pace partnership is probably the most feared combination in the entire tournament. Kolkata Knight Riders splashed out big in the auction after a poor 2025. Cameron Green became their most expensive buy in IPL history. They actually have some huge injury worries coming into the tournament; Harshit Rana, Akash Deep and Matheesha Pathirana all out. You’d have to worry about their bowling. Obviously their batting looks good, but they will surely have issues given how good the batting surface is here.
Historically, Mumbai hold a commanding head-to-head record against KKR in the IPL so they will be pleased to welcome them for their opening game of the season. You do get the feel that both sides need a fast start to the tournament this year. Can KKR contain this Mumbai batting line-up with such a weakened bowling attack?
WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:
As I said above, were at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. We’ve had some huge scores here recently; usually it’s a packed house and the atmosphere is immense too. The surface offers consistent pace and bounce, and the short square boundaries – typically measuring between 65 and 70 metres – make it a ground where the ball flies off the bat. The average first-innings IPL score at the Wankhede sits in the 170-175 range, though scores well in excess of that are getting more common here. Dare I say we’ve been getting too close to 300 these days as a conversation topic. As the Mumbai night goes on, humidity rises significantly; we usually get a heavy dew here and you want to bat first. With India hosting the T20 World Cup, and the Wankhede was a venue for the knockout stages – it hosted the second Semi-Final between India and England. The pitches may not be as fresh as in a typical IPL season, so it will be worth monitoring how the surface actually plays in the first few overs.
RECOMMENDED BET:
Usually we have very competitive betting heats for the IPL, but Mumbai come into this game as the hot favourites. They are trading 1.58 at the time of writing, which is very short by IPL standards – especially in the first week. It’s understandable to be fair – they are at home, they have a formidable batting line-up, the Bumrah-Boult pace duo is back, and they are facing a Kolkata side that has had their pace attack decimated by injuries before the tournament has even started. I’m obviously keen to keep stakes very low here – there are plenty of questions in the first week of the tournament. We don’t know exactly what conditions will be like at the Wankhede, we don’t know how the pitch plays after the World Cup, and we haven’t seen these sides in action yet this season. That said, the injury situation at KKR is genuinely worrying. However, from a value point of view I’m happy with a small bet on them at 2.68 – their batting can still do something wonderful here.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:
As discussed above, the team chasing will get a significant advantage if we get the usual dew in Mumbai. It’s hard to see anything buy a high scoring game here – I would just make sure we have the usual flat wicket here after the World Cup – however, after that – I’d be happy to support the batting side in both innings, but especially lean heavily towards the team chasing once dew arrives. The only bowler you’d consider supporting here is Bumrah, just because he’s on a level of his own.
