PREVIEW
The third round of the Capital One Cup continues tonight and the best tie of the round is Manchester United against Newcastle at Old Trafford. Despite labouring along for much of the season so far, United have still managed to win their last five successive games and head into tonight’s match as big favourites.
Newcastle’s 3-0 win last season was their first versus Manchester United since 2001 but they haven’t won at United since February 1972. They may have drawn two of their last four visits there but the Magpies lost 3-0 and 6-0 in the other two.
Manager Sir Alex Ferguson is likely to have taken real delight from seeing neighbours Manchester City knocked out last night by Aston Villa and, even though he is likely to rotate his squad, he won’t be taking the tournament lightly.
The Red Devils are the joint-third most successful side in League Cup history and have won three of the last seven competitions. Newcastle have yet to win on the road this season and it’s hard to see that changing tonight.
