DAQMAN’S SATURDAY VERDICT: The feature races of Lockinge and London Gold Cup are so wide open today that my usual technique of giving myself several chances would be too expensive and might still miss the mark, so I’ve settled for the best of the BETDAQ market.
SAHLAN NOTABLE REVENGE
⭕ 2.35 Newbury (Lockinge Stakes) Globetrotting Notable Speech – from Deauville to Del Mar, Keeneland and Woodbine – hiked his earnings to £2.5m in the second half of last year but has never topped the rating he achieved in winning the 2024 Guineas.
🤔 LAYS LOGIC: With his stable scoring twice only in May (both novice races), he looks vulnerable to a predatory pack of wannabes.
Sahlan tried to follow up his Moulin defeat of Rosallion, staying on well behind Notable Speech in the Breeders Cup Mile.
The Graffard stable had the 2025 champion Calandagan and has just won the French Guineas with Rayif.
Damysus: Team Gosden’s Frankel colt with an explosive turn of foot is ready for another rung of the ladder after a Group-3 Newmarket double spanning the winter divide.
More Thunder: Man-in-form William Haggas created this 7f Hungerford Stakes winner on today’s course from one campaigned to win up to 1m 2f by Sir Michael Stoute.
Zeus Olympios needed the run when Opera Ballo turned around their autumn Group-2 one-two when they met again in the Sandown Mile.
The Lion In Winter finished within a couple of lengths of Notable Speech in the Breeders Cup Mile, after being beaten only two lengths overall in three Group-1s including shock defeat by older horse, 100-1 Cicero’s Gift, in the QE11.
Sahlan and Notable Speech have the main credential as Group-1 winners; they win the Lockinge 75% of the time. Sahlan, who needs top of the ground, rarely if ever gets that in France so this race is a real target. Betdaq Betting Exchange 9.9 taken.
I’M BULLISH ABOUT TORO
⭕ 3.45 Newbury (London Gold Cup) Aidan O’Brien has come to this race recently (form 130), winning it three years ago but then only third and unplaced behind Roger Varian (form 10031) last year.
The two yards now meet with Al Azd (Varian) the improver – up 10lb this year, scoring twice – but down in trip and rated 11lb behind Port Of Spain (O’Brien), who has won only his maiden.
He was handed higher and higher marks for running behind the stable’s Classic hopes, Hawk Mountain, Christmas Day and Puerto Rico, never really in contention in three Group starts at 12-1 twice and 34-1, and now drops to handicap company in cheekpieces.
Like the Lockinge, this race appears wide open. I’ll take a chance on the gelding Tierra Del Toro (‘land of the bull’) by a French Guineas and Derby winner out of a sister to the fabulous Treve, the dual Arc winner. BETDAQ 10.5 taken.
THIS MAYBE A BIG BOOST
⭕ 2.50 Newmarket An open race like those at Newbury but this time, we have a range of offers to combine and give us a fighting chance of a profit.
Last year’s winner, Dark Tornado, at around 25-1, and long-time absentee, the well-touted Shah at 10-1, are big offers against Forty Years On (BETDAQ 5.7), who beat Royal Ascot bound York winner Maybe Not in the autumn.
⭕ 3.00 Thirsk Blackisthenewblack made all at Kempton in first-time cheekpieces in April, and comes out of the one stall, a big help as last year’s winner proved. Huge at BETDAQ 8.6 this morning.
⭕ 4.07 Navan Derby entry Limestone (BETDAQ 3.5) can outrun another disappointing Aidan O’Brien three-year-old, New Zealand.
⭕ 7.40 Doncaster Palace Artois has a lot to live up to; related to Rock Of Gibraltar and Nell Gwynn on the dam’s side. Has her sights lowered for this handicap debut: BETDAQ 10.5.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
