Last weekend’s action was very interesting. There was a time when Manchester United v Arsenal was one of the clashes of the season, but how times have changed.
United bullied Arsenal at Old Trafford last term in an 8-2 thrashing but last Saturday’s 2-1 win was arguably even easier for the Red Devils. Arsenal showed nothing and Fulham this weekend won’t be the walkover the odds compilers have assumed.
Chelsea and Manchester City both dropped points last weekend to hand United the initiative in the title race and both clubs face huge games this weekend on a Super Sunday well worthy of its name.
I see a lot more improvement in Liverpool’s game than some people have given Brendan Rodgers credit for. I bet he wishes he hadn’t let Andy Carroll go though, as the England man would have at least given him different options. We saw how threadbare Liverpool’s squad was when they lost to Anzhi Makhachkala on Thursday with Rodgers leaving all his key men at home.
I was really impressed that Chelsea managed to see of Shakhtar Donetsk on Wednesday. That was the Ukrainians first loss in 38 games but I still expect them to qualify for the next round of the Champions League and am tipping them to surprise a few people.
Sunday’s battle at Stamford Bridge is pretty easy for me to call. Roberto Di Matteo’s side have been poor in defence for much of the season but they only have Luis Suarez to fear and, assuming John Terry is recalled, he can stop the tricky Uruguayan. Verdict – Chelsea win.
Andre Villas-Boas can count himself a lucky man to have been handed the helm at White Hart Lane. He’s definitely a talented manager, as his time at Porto showed, but he seems a bit one dimensional and the Premier League is unforgiving.
Further north and it’s unacceptable that Roberto Mancini can splash over £100 million on players and still struggle to qualify for the next stages of the Champions League. There’s something not quite right at the Etihad at the moment but as least the team showed some spirit to fight back from two down against Ajax.
City’s home record is still up there with the very best in Europe and you have to go back to December 2010 for the last time they lost a home league game. They can continue that run and see off Spurs in Sunday’s first game.
