WAKE UP IN THE MORNING TO BLACK CAVIAR’S SILVER JUBILEE: While the Flat remains quiet in England, Black caviar is making the biggest noise of her career in Australia, aiming for her 25th consecutive victory early tomorrow morning, British time.
CAN YOU CATCH A CLASSIC WINNER IN THE TRIALS? Daqman examines the recent results of the Classic trials at Leopardstown and Newmarket in search of the best provider of Guineas potential.
8.2 NAP AT WETHERBY: He goes in search of a big-odds nap at Wetherby, taking 8.2 on BETDAQ this morning, with Jamie Moore called on to travel North and do the job.
Eat your heart out Frankel fans and step off the podium Sprinter Sacre. Black Caviar is back to claim the headlines tomorrow morning with win number 25. Consecutive. And without much kerfuffle, apart from the ‘Ascot incident.’
Jockey Luke Nolen’s only problem with her was winning too easily that day of the Diamond Jubilee last June, easing her down ‘so as not to annoy her’ and because he thought she had done enough. He so nearly was caught.
Tomorrow morning is Black Caviar’s own Silver Jubilee, having already won the Lightning Stakes at Flemington in February and making it 24 from 24 at Moonee Valley in March.
Tomorrow is a day of days, since she can match compatriot Kingston Town’s 25 wins (his was from 30 starts) and be mentioned in the same breath as the legendary Phar Lap.
New readers start her: I’m talking Australia because we still haven’t started our Flat-season-proper properly, and boy do we need something to look forward to, if only having Black Caviar serve it up to us at Royal Ascot again in June.
The only other quality horse in the headlines today is Irish – the latest Ballydoyle comet called Mars – and the Classic scene will get its first major changes there at the weekend. Here’s the trials schedule for the next few days, and what each one usually throws up, if anything:
Sunday: Leopardstown 2,000 Guineas Trial Fumer’s Green, Dunboyne Express, Noll Wallop? Not names you will remember, but they were the last three winners of this.
However, now and then a star trialist emerges, two for Dermot Weld: Famous Name won it in 2008, the second of his 21 wins, and Refuse To Bend in 2003 (Newmarket 2,000 Guineas). So check out the Weld.
Sunday: Leopardstown 1,000 Guineas Trial After Furmer’s Green, Homecoming Queen made it a trials double on the day for Aidan O’Brien last year at this time.
Homecoming Queen’s victory and subsequent Newmarket 1,000 Guineas win followed a similar Ballydoyle double through Virginia Waters in 2005.
Sunday: Ballysax Stakes, Leopardstown Jim Bolger, three Ballysax wins in a row, usually stirs the Classics markets in this race: his Light Heavy (2012) went on to be third in the Irish Derby; Banimpire (2011) won the Ribblesdale
But again the best recent winners have hailed from Ballydoyle: Fame And Glory (2009), winner of the Irish Derby after running up to Sea The Stars at Epsom, and Yeats (2004), though his top-class form was delayed another season.
Wednesday: Free Handicap, Newmarket Not a patch on its old prestige but Charles Hills (Reyaadah) and Richard Hannon (Tamayuz Star) both seem keen on theirs in recent interviews. Unlikely to be up to Classic standard.
Wednesday: Nell Gwyn Stakes, Newmarket The 2011 winner, Barefoot Lady, went on to be a nearly horse: second in the Musidora, third in the Coronation Stakes; Music Show (2010), third in the 1,000 back at Newmarket, was also disappointing for Mick Channon.
And the last filly to win this and fly high in the Classic,s Spacious (1,000 Guineas) was regarded as a lucky Newmarket winner on soft ground. She never won another race.
TODAY: Fergal O’Brien has a massive strike rate (43%) with handicap debutants and Queen Of Mantua (3.25 Wetherby) has Timmy Murphy booked: 5.3 on BETDAQ as I write.
Peter Bowen went through a stinking bad spell, taking the likes of Vinnie My Boy (4.00) into the doldrums with him.
Bowen is back in form now and it seems significant that Jamie Moore goes up to Wetherby for the one ride on ‘Vinnie’: 8.2 on BETDAQ this morning.
Ballyclough (5.10) has been difficult to keep right but, when he is, he scores fresh. Ulys Du Charmil has also had time off, waiting for better ground.
Jim Boyle, who is striking generally at 67%, has one runner at Lingfield, the outsider Uncomplicated (3.35); we’re saving on Purcell, who should now show the benefit of his gelding op and his short-head CD defeat eight days ago.
There’s a class-3 hurdle at Chepstow, so the form should be reliable. Araldur’s certainly is; he’s been consistently involved in this grade and higher, and the ground has come right for him.
Whisky Yankee could show the improvement needed, and Timesawastin has to be considered; the hood didn’t work at the Cheltenham festival but Paul Moloney stays faithful without one: 13.5.
