STRUCK DOWN BY LIGHTENING: Shamrock is still coming to terms with the poor run of his nap yesterday and hopes for better at Dundalk tonight.

Sorry, an absolute shocker from the nap, Silver Lightening, yesterday.

One of those results you are left scratching around for explanations just to put your own mind at rest.

I always TRY and find a reason because I think it helps your future selection processes.

If you go for a horse that’s trying something for the first time (eg: first start on Polytrack, wearing blinkers etc) you can fall back on that as a reason for failure. But, with Silver Lightening, I thought I had every box ticked and the price reflected that too.

Ultimately, horses like humans have bad days – and that’s about all I can find to explain the flop.

The ONLY consolation was that the race was won (narrowly) by Diesel Ten (trained by Dermot Weld) at 7/1 – the horse I rated the biggest danger to the selection.

That kind of result can knock your confidence going forward too but we had a 2/1 winning nap at Dundalk on Wednesday and can hopefully grab another tonight.

This time I do go with Dermot Weld for the nap. The stable is in good form and Magnolia Ridge looks the answer to the 6.45.

With three starts, he is relatively experienced in the context of this race and shaped well here when a close-up third on his final start of last season.

SHAMROCK’S BETS:

NAP: Magnolia Ridge (6.45 Dundalk)
