DAQMAN NAP WINS AT 15-8: There was another winner in the headlines for Daqman yesterday, when he napped John Gosden’s Prince Of Stars (WON 15-8) at Sandown last night. This followed his Brighton Mile fanfare for Mime Dance (WON 5-1, Betdaq 11.5).
31 POINTS PROFIT ON THE DAY: He had earlier landed an if-lose bet on William Haggas’s runners at Yarmouth, the first one going down, the second – with the stake ratcheted up to cover the first bet’s losses – was Buredyma (WON 11-4).
JUST RIGHT FOR ISLA AT BRIGHTON
BRIGHTON Both direct and collateral form of those around Just Isla (4.40) suggest that she has her big chance today, if she copes with any going change because of the rain about.
Just Isla won three from five last season, including two here at Brighton, and her yard is in good form with two well backed favourites successful, including one on the first day here. I took 5.1 on BETDAQ.
MUSSELBURGH With the handicapper seemingly having caught up on Saved By The Bell, the Archerfield Cup (4.00) had an even-money favourite this morning in Alex My Boy.
But the Mark Johnston favourite still has something to prove, having won only a four-runner race a ‘month’ slow, and previously in June at Ascot ‘very slowly away’ and on today’s course ‘ran in snatches.’
There could be some pace on from Be Perfect, with trainer David Nicholls just through a purple patch of seven winners in 10 days. But this one is not so perfect on a right-handed track (0-8).
And the lead may be disputed by Thimaar, not wanted in the BETDAQ market at 41.0 this morning as I write, but from a yard with 10 consecutive in the first four.
Dark Ruler has never won beyond 1m 2f and Ex Oriente is a one-paced sort very difficult to place (one win in two years).
Jonny Delta goes well when freshened up and was a CD winner a grade higher in April (Lady Kashaan behind, returning from injury).
Jonny Delta looks the part today with Graham Lee booked, despite a huge 17.0 on BETDAQ. He was worth an early position in a race which was 105% total percentage of the probabilities in the orange, 5.8 bar one.
NEWMARKET Rain at Newmarket dampens enthusiasm for an early bet – there’s just no telling what the ground will be like – but the one I liked at 14.5 was Zanetto (8.20), seemingly high in the handicap.
In fact, Zanetto, visored first time, has dropped 8lb since the start of a season in which this stuffy type took time to get going and then was aimed high (Buckingham Palace Stakes, Royal Ascot).
Zanetto had six races in the Pattern last year, winning a Listed, and this is only his second start below class 2 since April, 2013, his first a let-down when gambled-on favourite. The visors and William Buick could make the difference.
Those who have followed William Haggas and John Gosden during the summer have probably packed their bags and gone to the Bahamas by now.
These prolific winning stables clash in the fillies’ handicap (7.50) tonight when, again, top weight will scare the punters away from Haggas’s Etaab.
But Etaab and the Gosden, Water Hole, really do deserve to be up there, clear of this otherwise ordinary field.
But did Water Hole really warrant a 7lb rise for her Doncaster win over History Book, receiving weight from one who had finished last of four at Windsor.
Etaab beat two previous winners at Doncaster and earned the tribute ‘a sweet filly with a great temperament; there’s probably more to come,’ from jockey that day, Paul Hanagan, and racereaders thought she looked Listed class: 3.55 this morning.
HAYDOCK More rain than ever forecast here, on an already good-to-soft surface. That improves the chances of Joe Doyle and Evervescent in the BETDAQ apprentice series (5.50) of following up their July win on this course.
TIPPERARY Showers should see the ground right for Sir Maximilian (6.05), who would have preferred slightly better ground than the firmish Goodwood surface which saw him seventh in the Stewards Cup.
