NEWTON ABBOT THRILLER PLUS CHANCING BEST VALUE AT YORK: Daqman goes racing at Newton Abbot and York today, after a near miss with his Thursday nap. Form figures for his best bet in the last eight days are 11111412. Today’s is at 4.05 with a big value BETDAQ Chance.
BIG-RACE BATTLE TOMORROW: Look out tomorrow for Daqman’s verdict on the Cesarewitch, one of the last big-race days of the Flat season with the score in his challenge to Pricewise of the Racing Post 65-28 (overall 104-40).
TAQUIN TO OUTLINE GOLD CUP CREDENTIALS
2.30 York The second race at York is a tricky looking handicap over the minimum distance and with the ever softening ground, the picture is even more tainted.
David O’Meara and Daniel Tudhope have teamed up this season and proved to be a force to be reckoned with. Fresh from their Group 1 win in the Prix De l’Abbaye on Sunday, the pair go together in another sprint with the top weight Eccleston.
Despite having to give weight away all round, the pair look to be the most solid option and may still have a little improvement left in him to exploit the mark of 95.
Of the remainder that should have chances, many have a question above them on whether or not they will handle the ground or not and there are too many questions marks on the others for me.
3.00 York This is a slightly better better race over just short of 9 furlongs and although GM Hopkins looks like the one to beat, his short price is not very appealing in an 18 runner contest like this.
It may prove to beat Buick and Gosden with their three time winner who runs off a mark of 100 but the value is just not there.
The former Jim Bolger trained Earth Drummer could be there or thereabouts if handling the ground, but this is a big concern.
I’m going to take a chance on Big Johnny D to run into a place at a huge price. He’s more effective on this type of ground and he has won twice this season. He is a tentative each way selection.
4.05 York This is a really tricky contest over a mile and a half and there are several of the 13 runners to chose from.
Ryan Moore is a notable booking for Old Town Boy however, I would fear that his mark of 89 is the limit for him despite getting weight from almost all the field.
At the other end of the Handicap, Esteaming is another that looks to have hit his ceiling at 93 and although he could run well again, I think this will probably be though for them.
Chancery is one that is dropping down in the Handicap. He runs today off a mark of 91, which is the same mark his last win came under. Having been as high as 100 earlier this season, he has dropped down and now has his preferred ground and a set of cheek pieces, which should also go in his favour. He looks the best value bet at York today.
3.20 Newton Abbot Uncle Jimmy was runner up in this race 12 months ago and he tries again for the Philip Hobbs and Richard Johnson partnership.
He ran in some decent contests last season, including in the Coral Cup where he was simply outclassed. This race looks more to his quality and he will be a big threat.
If he can reproduce the form of last year’s renewal he is going to be very hard to beat and this looks a really nice opportunity for him to go one better.
3.55 Newton Abbot This is first real contest of the new Jumps Season and it is a really good race despite the small number.
Cheltenham winner Taquin Du Seuil will tell us today whether or not he is to be a Gold Cup contender or not. I’m not sure if his stamina will allow him to be a Gold Cup horse but I think he could be classy enough to be there.
Today’s trip is perfect for him however, and I think he will take a lot of beating.
Double Ross is a really likeable horse and he is likely to put it up to the jolly as he receives weight from him and only has a couple of lengths to make up. If Taquin Du Seuil is to progress to the heights that the team think he can, he should be able to overcome this.
Colour Squadron does not always want to put his best foot forward in my opinion and is still a Maiden over fences. I was very surprised that AP McCoy had selected him over Taquin Du Seuil originally but the Champion Jockey misses today’s racing after a heavy fall yesterday.
Paul Nicholls’s pair of Black Thunder and Wonderful Charm look to have a bit to do with these although the latter is a smart enough type but the aforementioned trio should be too good for them.
