ROYAL ACLAIM A FIRM FAVOURITE
They’re flying on the firm ground. But how many young sprinters can we fit into one season, and what happens when it rains?
Royal Aclaim is the latest. Only a Listed win at York but ‘went clear final furlong, impressive,’ and rates at least 100. A daughter of Aclaim, Cachet, won the 1,000 Guineas on firm ground, and Royal Aclaim can continue to improve in summer conditions.
Flotus would be a huge problem for Royal Aclaim in the King George at Goodwood but Ed Cosford may switch the York Summer Stakes winner to the Nunthorpe at the Ebor Meeting.
Perfect Power was the dominant three-year-old sprinter until Christophe Soumillon reported that the colt was ‘never traveling’ (seventh) in the July Cup won by Alcohol Free. ‘He wouldn’t let himself down on the firm ground.’
Perfect Power won the Commonwealth Cup at Ascot on officially ‘good to firm’. But the time of the race was slower than average and jockeys reported ‘genuinely good ground.’
Naval Crown showed his Platinum Jubilee victory at Royal Ascot to be no fluke when second to Alcohol Free. Likely target the Haydock Sprint. Has been placed on firm, good, soft and heavy, and looks well suited to Haydock, where there is usually an easier surface.
Artorius stayed on to be third in the July Cup, just as he had done in the Platinum Jubilee. If we see him again in Europe, it may be over a longer trip, and the 6.5f Prix Maurice De Gheest has been mentioned.
But he’s been missing strike generally since his 2yo days, with world form between 5.5f and a mile: 224330033.
LORD IS KING OF THE CASTLE
⭕ 1.50 Ayr There was plenty to like about Lord Sam’s Castle’s debut at Hamilton last month when he failed by a neck to pull off a 33/1 shock. He only found Mas Rapido too good and was in front of the favourite Ludo’s Landing who has run well against since.
The race might well be a little above average and its encouraging that his trainer Iain Jardine is bidding for his third winner in as many days, following successes at Hamilton and Perth over the weekend.
As usual, in a novice event like this, we could always be vulnerable to a big improver but the main dangers on Betdaq Betting Exchange have both had a couple of starts and look beatable on the evidence to date.
Penalty Charge made a pleasing Hamilton debut when second but then was a bitterly disappointing beaten favourite at Leicester next time out when finishing seventh and beaten 12 lengths.
We’renotreallyhere improved on his debut to finish a good second at Thirsk last time out but is already shaping as though he needs a longer trip to show his best form.
CONFLICTING OPINIONS
⭕ 2.15 Ffos Las The form of Conflict’s Thirsk second (beaten five lengths) might only be modest so I was surprised to see Andrew Balding’s runner trading at odds-on during the morning on Betdaq.
A better value play might be Last Madonna who seems to be improving on each start and ran her best race yet over this trip at Lingfield last time out when a close second to the odds-on Zero Carbon who followed up with a class 3 win at Haydock.
Unless I’ve completely mis-read the race that looks far more solid form and the filly might take some beating.
COME ON THE NAP
⭕ 4.15 Newton Abbot The Gordon Elliott yard were as hot as the weather on Sunday with five winners from eight runners, including a Perth treble.
Come On Do Berlais is their only runner of the day on Monday which might be a tip in itself but she should be good enough to defy a penalty for her win at Kelso in May.
She looks a lot more appealing than the local Paul Nicholls challenge of Justmyimagination who was beaten 12 lengths into second on debut.
