THE EDGE: Our cricket tipster The Edge previews Tuesday’s 1st ODI between ENGLAND v INDIA with a recommended BETDAQ bet.

MATCH OVERVIEW:

We have a quick turnaround on Tuesday as England and India jump into the ODI series after a pulsating T20 series! India won the series 2-1, but England’s batting finally firing on Sunday really sets up this series nicely. This series forms part of the ODI Super League, which has been scraped by the ICC going forward, however the top eight teams qualify for the next ODI World Cup. To be honest, England and India are certain of finishing in the top eight so the points system doesn’t really apply to them. Nevertheless, we’re sure to have an excellent three games on Betdaq Betting Exchange full of drama – the T20 series was excellent!

Despite conceding 215 runs on Sunday, India’s bowlers basically won the T20 series for them. Their batters have fired too of course, but it takes a lot to beat this England side and India’s bowlers delivered. Even in defeat, India still managed 198/9 and their batting is in a very good place heading into this series. Although India are firing, Virat Kohli failed again on Sunday. He comes into this series as the main talking point – he is under immense pressure and needs a score. The talk of him getting dropped is getting louder and louder, and even Kohli fans can’t argue if he isn’t scoring. Perhaps he just needs a break and maybe getting dropped isn’t a big negative long-term – but this India side is full of talent so he will find it hard to get back in the team!

This should be another very close game, and I’d expect the odds to flip flop a lot in-running. I don’t think you could say anything other than we have two top class sides here, and two pretty even sides too. We saw a lot of runs on Sunday, and we usually see pretty high scores at The Oval!

WEATHER AND PITCH WATCH:

As I said above, I would expect a lot of runs here. The Oval is usually a high scoring ground, and we have two of the best batting sides in the world here. Trent Bridge has produced a lot of high scores this year in the T20 Blast and we saw that translate into the International game at the weekend. Well we’ve had a lot of runs at The Oval in the Blast too this season – obviously we move to the longer form of the game here, but England attack ODI’s like a T20 these days anyway! We saw a score of 228/4 here in the Blast, and also the chasing side has had a big edge. That being said, it’s natural to want to bowl but given the good batting conditions, how big a score do you want to chase? Chasing 350 is easier said than done!

RECOMMENDED BET:

Although England bounced back and won on Sunday, I feel you can’t be disappointed with this Indian side. There clearly isn’t much between these sides, but before the off India are worth a small investment at 1.88 for me. Their batting is really firing and I’d expect that to continue here – apart from Kohli but they can carry him for the moment. Even though they conceded a big score Sunday, their bowling has been very good and you’d expect a big score at Trent Bridge anyway. Their batting still fired with close to 200 runs. The truth is there isn’t much between the sides in batting terms, but India’s bowling definitely looks a little stronger. This is a game for small stakes before the off, and finding good positions to up stakes in-running.

IN-RUNNING STRATEGY:

The headline for any in-running strategy here should be to expect runs. The Oval is generally a high scoring ground, we’ve had high scores in the T20 Blast this summer, and we have two top class batting sides. Everything lines-up for runs here, and you’d probably say a par score will probably be over 300 too. With that in mind, I really wouldn’t stay on the bowling side for long – I would mainly focus on looking for trades on the batting side. Much like Sunday, you’d expect the side batting first to score big and the market will move their way. We’ve made good money taking on Virat Kohli so far this tour, and I see no reason to not do that again here.
