TESTING GROUND AT PLUMPTON: But it’s on and DAQMAN seeks out the heavy ground experts on the seven race card.
LINGFIELD AND WOLVERHAMPTON: Keep the all-weather fans happy with a combined 15 races on the Polytrack.
Plumpton has survived the worst the weather can throw at it but does go ahead this afternoon on heavy ground which is soft in places.
The clerk of the course reports that the bottom bend is the area which continues to hold water with the going deeper and potentially more holding.
Trainer Venetia Williams is in good form recently with 8 winners from 38 in the last two weeks and the biggest tick in favour of her runner in the opener, Uhlan Bute, is that we know he will handle the ground.
He certainly handled it well last time out at Leicester, just six days ago, when chasing home Hint Of Mint which was an improved effort on his previous showing at Cheltenham (on good ground).
He had previously run well at Sandown in a handicap hurdle (good to soft) and it may well be that he needs the soft ground to show his best form.
Minority Interest ran a cracker here on debut to be only beaten a short head at 33/1, though this is tougher and there’s no evidence in his flat CV that he can handle ground as testing as this.
Raven’s Tower won over course and distance in November on soft ground and could prove the biggest danger to Uhlan Bute, my nap of the day.
The ground could well be cut up by the last race and I’m not sure I want to be with hat-trick seeking Beau Lake here, despite his all the way course and distance success last week. It came in a much more modest event than todays (he only had three rivals) and the 7lb penalty is enough to make me look elsewhere.
I thought Little Roxy looked of interest at the BETDAQ prices for trainer Anna Newton-Smith and jockey Adam Wedge. Little Roxy has twice won over course and distance, and has been given a break since a disappointing run at Kempton. He certainly appeals in the place market.
On the all-weather, the 2.50 at Lingfield should be a shoot out between Bretherton and Ex Ex. I think the market has got it spot on in favouring Bretheron for Richard Fahey who was unlucky here in November before going on to run well in second at Wolverhampton last time out.
