HOW BIG A CLASSICS POINTER IS THE FUTURITY? Sceau Royal’s win yesterday, an old soldier over Jumps, heralds the first big meeting at Cheltenham this week on the day the babies of 2022 stake their Classics claim in the Futurity on the Flat. Daqman reveals just what the race can produce.
⚠️ BREAKING NEWS: The Cheltenham Festival will remain at four days. The Jockey Club announced this morning that they were resisiting the temptation to switch to a five day format.
BACK TO THE FUTURE ON SATURDAY
World Flat racing is preparing fireworks. But you could make a bonfire of the rest of the English fixtures and not miss very much before the curtain comes down on November 5.
The Doncaster finale that day will be the traditional damp squib, hugely overshadowed by the spectacle of the Breeders Cup on the same date at Keeneland.
The big attractions of the final week begin in Australia with the Melbourne Cup at Flemington (Tuesday morning, November 1st)
The best we have in England is the Futurity this Saturday, which has produced five 2,000 Guineas winners since 2011.
It has a weak supporting card, milk made water by the launch of the Cheltenham Jumps season. But the Futurity itself can be a kingmaker for the following season: it goes back more than 60 years to the days of Ribocco, Vaguely Noble and High Top. Winners this century:
High Chaparral (2001), winner of the Epsom and Irish Derbys the following year, and subsequently champion colt in America (2002-3) after winning the Breeders Cup Turf twice.
Motivator (2004) won the Epsom Derby.
Authorized (2006) won the Epsom Derby and was European champion three-year-old.
St Nicholas Abbey (2009) his Futurity made him European champion two-year-old. He won the Coronation Cup three times and the Breeders Cup Turf in 2011.
Camelot (2011) won the 2,000 Guineas, and the Epsom and Irish Derbys.
Saxon Warrior (2017) won the 2,000 Guineas
Magna Grecia (2018) won the 2,000 Guineas
Kameko (2019) won the 2,000 Guineas
Mac Swiney (2020) won the Irish 2,000 Guineas
Luxembourg (2021) won the Irish Champion Stakes
Aidan O’Brien has won it 10 times since 1997, followed by Peter Chapple-Hyam (3), Andrew Balding (2) and Saeed Bin Suroor (2), and O’Brien’s Auguste Rodin is likely to start favourite on Saturday.
VIVA VINO
⭕ 2.35 Pontefract (Phil Bull Trophy) Named after the Timeform founder from nearby Halifax who always had a liking for long distance handicaps on the flat.
I can see where the maestro was coming from. It’s quite easy to rule out plenty of runners on stamina grounds alone over the extreme distances and around the contours of Pontefract it becomes even more of an attritional test – especially when the ground is on the soft side as it it today.
Vino Victrix looks a worthy favourite on the Betdaq Betting Exchange. The Hughie Morrirson trained four-year-old arrives in the best form and the only distance worries are that he might find this trip too short !! He was still running on well after running a cracker to finish second to Run For Oscar in the 2m 2f Cesarewitch earlier in the month.
He has winning form on this ground at Goodwood which bodes well for his chances of enjoying the undulations of Pontefract on his first visit.
The danger might come from the mare Indefatigable who has limited experience on the flat but her two runs did include a maiden win here. She is better known as a hurdler with six wins on her CV and she enjoys some cut in the ground. The only downside is that she has been off the track for a while which swings me back to Vino Victrix.
POKER FACE COULD FOLD
⭕ 3.10 Pontefract There’s no doubt that Poker Face is the sexy horse with the 11 form figures but the handicapper hasn’t exactly been generous with his starting mark of 87 for the Crisford trained three-year-old.
There was plenty to like about his first two wins, both over a mile, here at Pontefract and on the all-weather at Newcastle but he is now up in trip and tackling softer ground for the first time.
Reach is better value and has better credentials for my money.
She is already proven on the ground – a winner here last time over 1m 4f and was actually very impressive that day. I don’t think she will be troubled by the drop in distance.
MANHATTAN OVER THE AUSSIE
⭕ 6.30 Wolverhampton A class 4 is as good as it gets at Wolverhampton tonight. Aussie Banker remains progressive and is returning after being gelded.
I prefer the chances of Manhattanville who probably just needs to repeat his course and distance third from last week to win this and hopefully the new head gear will be a positive.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
