12-1 NAP FOR PROFITS-KING DAQMAN: After four winning days in a row for a profit of more than 80 points last week, with scorers including 10.5 and 11-2, Daqman finished the week yesterday with a mighty strike, napping Mrs Burbidge (WON 12-1), for a return of more than 100 points from one race.

WORD HAS IT, THERE’S 100-1 GAMBLE: News of a ‘scintillating trial’ may have the Irish Champion Stakes betting in turmoil. Daqman describes how news leaked from the gallops prompted claims of a 100-1 gamble on a colt called Poet’s Word, yet another late developer for maestro Sir Michael Stoute.

100-1 TILT AT CHAMPION CHURCHILL

My Word, what a punt! When you consider the strength of the opposition – Churchill, Eminent and Highland Reel front most markets – a mystery gamble on Poet’s Word for Saturday’s Irish Champion Stakes is a stunner.

Well, mystery no more. I can tell you the story chronologically. It begins on Saturday morning when most punters were absorbed in their Saturday racecards. One or two ‘shrewdies’ began inquiries with the leading layers.

Whether 100-1 betting claims are genuine, or why three firms were laying 14-1 by Sunday afternoon – and the others were playing dumb – I can only surmise. More bookies were expected to join in today.

It all began for me when I received this message at around 11 o’clock Saturday (after my Daqman column for the day had gone to the editor/webmaster): ‘Scintillating gallop on trial ground this morning by Poet’s Word and recommend you request price Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown.’

If the front of the market had suggested a one-horse race, like Enable in the Arc, I’d have jumped in to grab something like this among the rest of the field, as I did Cracksman at 10-1 for Chantilly yesterday.

But with Churchill, Eminent and Highland Reel all solidly quoted, and with Winter, Barney Roy and others generally included in most books, I could see that a place bet would be the essential part of any interest in Poet’s Word.

Sir Michael Stoute’s improver has shot through the handicap ranks (from class 3 at Goodwood last July) to a class 2 at Chelmsford (April) and finally the Group-3 Glorious Stakes at Goodwood last month for a total hike by the handicapper of 25lb. It needs to be 35lb.

Stoute certainly sees the late-developing four-year-old as a world-beater if only the world of the Canadian International, which was said to be the colt’s target after Goodwood. But he’s still 10lb behind Churchill and has to give him 6lb on Saturday.

That trial-ground gallop must have been an eye-opener, and the decs for the Irish Champion Stakes on Thursday will be eagerly awaited by those thieves who may have walleted 100-1. And the best of luck!

GOOD BUSINESS AT BRIGHTON

1.50 Windsor The Albany third, Take Me With You, entered in all the big ones – Moyglare, Rockfel, Mill Reef and Cheveley Park – is an 800,000-dollar filly who must surely get off the mark here, as the hub of your Daq Multiples.

2.10 Ripon Jim Crowley has been to Ripon only three times and won twice, one from one for Owen Burrows. The pair team up here with Mokaatil, the Windsor Castle fourth.

It’s the Lambourn trainer’s only runner of the day on a solo 434-mile round trip.

2.40 Ripon Crowley stays on to ride Qaaraat in this nursery but trainer Ed Dunlop’s 2yo-turf strike-rate is a measly 5% and he’s never won with one here. Qaaraat still hung badly despite the application of blinkers on the last day.

Nigel Tinkler’s form with juveniles on this course isn’t much better but he seems to be trying to sneak one in under the radar here with Silvestre De Sousa booked for bottomweight Daffy Jane, first time in a handicap.

4.00 Brighton Jeremy Noseda is in fine form and Good Business has been given a nothing mark for her handicap debut. This is a lousy day’s racing (beware a plethora of non-runners at Windsor); good business there ain’t. But combining decent offers with short shots might be good Daq Multiples business.
