SECONDS OUT IN BIG-RACE DRAMA: Daqman tipped both Cambridgeshire dead-heaters (2nd 8-1 and 2nd 10-1) split between the width of the track at Newmarket yesterday but neither could match Bronze Angel’s finish. He goes 102-38 up on Pricewise, thanks to Tiggy Wiggy (WON 6-4).
A STELLAR NAP IN IRELAND: He’s had 15 winning bets this week and his naps have finished 122112. Today he bets at Epsom, Musselburgh and The Curragh, needing three winners for a profit. His nap is Stellar Glow in Ireland.
IT’S ARC WEEK NEXT WEEK: Look out next week for our countdown to the Arc, with Daqman’s stats and ABC guides to the big races in Paris next Sunday.
TOP-RATED FINN CAN WIN ON CLASS
2.30 Musselburgh William Muir, bang in form right now with five winners from his last 13 runners, lifted this nursery last year with a gambled-on maiden, coming to the race with ‘duck-eggs’ (000), beaten a total of 38 lengths in the three starts.
Today his Surrey Pink has had eight chances, six of them in the frame, though that’s mostly made up of fourth five times in row. But, including Cam Hardie’s allowance, she now races off 17lb below her initial assessment and has twice been within a couple of lengths of the winner. I took 9.4.
3.05 Musselburgh Finn Class may benefit from a change of trainer, a holiday and a snip of his colthood. He can win without further improvement, according to the Racing Post ratings (top on 99).
The handicapper agrees to an extent, raising him a stone all told for four wins and three places in a sequence of eight races up to this stage a year ago, right up to class-2 level. Offers of 6.4 seemed reasonable.
4.15 Musselburgh Three-year-olds have never been beaten in this and the age group’s sole representative today, Leaderene, looks set to continue her four-from-five sequence.
DOLPHIN THE WORD IN THE VILLAGE
3.55 Epsom I fancy Dolphin Village could have the legs of these under the in-form and currently super-confident Paul Hanagan.
The son of Cape Cross is a keen-goer who should be suited to the course. He drops back in trip and down in class, and 9.4 offers are most acceptable.
4.30 Epsom (Apprentices Derby) The old adage ‘you can’t come without the horse’ hardly fits Oisin Murphy, who has lifted a few home that might not have won without his burgeoning skills.
But he’ll be glad to get aboard a fancied runner in Eton Rambler today. His last 10 starts have all been on horses of double-figure odds, including two no-hopers beaten a total of 81 lengths at 33-1 and 66-1.
Those Murphy skills did manage to raise Hawkin’s game, 25-1 narrow runner-up, staying on well in the Jersey Lily yesterday. She’s very much one for ‘next time.’
Murphy’s mount here, Eton Rambler, is one of only two in the race to have recent winning form at this class-4 level, but is having a private duel this season with Whinging Whillie. It’s 1-1 so far.
Gary Moore claims off ‘Willie’ to try to get the edge but Rambler won well when they met over this Epsom course and distance recently.
11.0 ABOUT KALANN RULES ON VALUE
2.25 The Curragh (Park Stakes) The early-mouse BETDAQ betting tells a story here, with the Sea The Stars filly, Stellar Glow, leapfrogging Ballydoyle’s forecast favourite, Qualify, in the market. Stellar has only a decent maiden effort under her belt, while Qualify has been racing in the highest class.
But she has finished almost exactly three-and-a-quarter lengths off Lucida each time in Group races here at the Curragh, including the recent Moyglare, as if making no progress. The drop down to the third grade will help but she certainly looks vulnerable to an improver.
2.55 The Curragh (Blenheim Stakes) If Qualify goes well, it’s a pointer to Ortiga in this one. If Stellar Glow beats her, then her Leopardstown conqueror, Tamadhor, gets a boost here.
In the early half of the decade, you could bet Ballydoyle blind in this – four winners in a row up to 2007 – but, in recent years, Aidan O’Brien has had no joy with a couple of places, a couple of losers.
The Great War could redeem himself and restore the O’Brien fortunes in this race with largely fillies to beat but I’ll wait on the Park Stakes result before I bet.
3.30 The Curragh (Beresford Stakes) Seven winners in the decade for Aidan O’Brien – form in the race 1110313111 – have included St Nicholas Abbey, and this race brought the second success of eight wins in a row for John Oxx’s Sea The Stars.
O’Brien’s runner, Ol’ Man River, impeccably bred by Montjeu out of Finsceal Beo, is a shade of odds on this morning, his stable already having twice beaten his main market rival, Tombelaine.
The spoiler could be the Teofilo colt, McGuigan, another with breeding lines that ooze class, and from a yard which can ready them first time, even at this level.
4.05 The Curragh (Amateur Derby) Sara O’Brien has a higher strike rate than any of these amateurs and bids to do better than Ana, who has failed to add to Joseph’s mile-maiden success on Blackstone (8.6 as I write)..Unexposed at today’s trip.
5.15 The Curragh (Loughbrown Stakes) Last year’s winner, Eye Of The Storm, runs in his own right here, after being pacemaker for Leading Light in his Irish St Leger demolition by Brown Panther two weeks back.
But it’s 8.0 bar one in the BETDAQ orange this morning, with odds on Forgotten Rules, who swerved the Leger and comes here after two scintillating lifetime runs which gave him a double between the Punchestown and Galway festivals. Reckoned a Cup horse in the making.
Altesse looks sure to improve but most interesting of his rivals is back-to-form Kalann, who once ran in Rock On Ruby’s Champion Hurdle. His recent third in the Doncaster Cup means he’s done good two grades higher than today.
He has his favoured ground and I took 11.0, Experience v Potential, getting 2.26 for a place where the favourite is 1.75 to win.
