TOMORROW: Daqman’s previews today include the Prix Morny two-year-old ‘classic’ and tomorrow he will be rating the juveniles seen so far.
TUESDAY: Look out on Tuesday for a big-race guide to a big week of quality racing, which features the Ebor Festival at York.
1.30 Deauville (Prix Morny) English trainers have pinched the Prix Morny from the French 15 times in the last 19 years, and are buoyed up today by the convincing success of Sandiva for Richard Fahey in yesterday’s Prix Du Calvados.
Today’s Morny used to be the champagne to yesterday’s apple brandy but has not produced a Classic winner since Zafonic (1992).
However, it has been a very good guide to the Middle Park Stakes this century, with four winners in the last seven seasons and before that, notably, Johannesburg (2001).
Richard Hannon runs two today – Brown Sugar and Anticipated – but has never won it. Mick Channon (Jallota) scored in 2005 with Silca’s Sister. Clive Brittain (Queen Mary winner Rizeena) bagged a hot nursery at Newmarket yesterday with Dancealot.
But the Morny headliner today must be the American raider No Nay Never, last seen in Europe winning the Norfolk Stakes at Royal Ascot, with five winners since from the next six to finish.
Vorda won the Robert Papin from Omaticaya, Vedeux, Muharaaj and Anticipated, who are all taking him on again today. The line is the sixth horse home, Ambiance, four lengths off the winner that day but only two-and-a-half behind No Nay Never at Ascot
More collateral form in that Anticipated and Ambiance were second and third, a neck and a length and a quarter off the winner, Brown Sugar, in the Molecomb at Goodwood.
Vorda extended his supremacy over Muharaaj between a Listed in June and the Robert Papin in July but don’t forget these are two-year-olds who should all improve, though not all at the same rate. Vorda and No Nay Never, both unbeaten and with just five runs between them, are the ones most likely to.
2.40 Deauville (Prix Jean Romanet) A tough one for punters with Romantica, only third to Grace Lady on very soft ground in the Spring, expected to turn the tables, having beaten her earlier at Chantilly on a sounder surface.
But standing in the way are Dalkala, winner of a Group 2 at York, and Sarkiyla, who was not far behind Dank, yesterday’s superb winner at Arlington Park, when they met in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot.
3.15 Deauville (Prix Kergorlay) Ed Dunlop’s Joshua Tree, twice a Grade-1 winner, has to give weight away all round, and was behind Ascot Gold Cup third, Top Trip, when they met earlier at York.
But the one they both have to beat is Verema, ahead of Top Trip and Only For Pleasure last season and in front of Goldtara last time out. They key to her is good ground (form on a sound surface 1321).
3.45 Pontefract Yet another clash of the generations, this time two fillies, as Galician drops back in trip, and takes on the Group-3-placed, second-season sprinter March.
March is up 18lb this year and Galician 21lb since the grey was winning at this trip 14 months ago. She’s stepped up from class-4 to class-2 handicaps, and is looking for some black type today.
I’m thinking that she ran too soon at Goodwood after her impressive success at Ascot in July and that, if she runs from the front like a Mark Johnston usually does, she can use her stamina and play catch-me, particularly if March is slow away, as last time at York. A magnificient 105% list of offers on BETDAQ means I can afford a stakes saver on the danger.
