BIG-RACE KEYS FROM THE STATS: Today Daqman first checks out the stats for Saturday’s Lanzarote Hurdle, pointing out which probables are linked and their form.

CLUES TO THE LANZAROTE

⭕ 2.40 Kempton, Saturday (Lanzarote Hurdle) STATS: Seven winners in the last nine were aged six or seven, carrying a maximum of 11st 4lb, with four trained (two each) by Nicky Henderson and Paul Nicholls.

IMPOSE TOI (6-11-5 Nicky Henderson) Henderson’s 2018 winner of this, William Henry, was winner and fourth in subsequent Coral Cups at the Cheltenham festival.

After Saturday’s 2m 5f race, Impose Toi dives down in distance for the annual Newbury hurdle (2m, February 10), but has been 212112 alternating between 2m and 2m 5f in the last year, though no wins yet outside novice company.

KING ALEXANDER (6-11-2 Nicky Henderson) Stepped up to senior handicapping with class-3 success Exeter which prompted the handicapper to hike him 10lb.

NURSE SUSAN (7-11-0 Dan Skelton) Fourth in the Dawn Run Mares’ Novices at the Cheltenham festival but won a mares handicap hurdle there (2m 4f+) in December.

PRINZE ZALTAR (7-10-6 Philip Rothwell) Excellent form last Spring, receiving 14lb when beating Music Of Tara at Navan (2m 4f) but they are now rated within a pound of each other, after a good autumn by Prince Zaltar.

He came from a long way back at Aintree in December to get within six lengths of Sonigino (Paul Nicholls) on heavy and is now 6lb better off. Drying ground will help.

TEDDY BLUE (6-11-3, Gary Moore) Excellent efforts last Spring, third in the big Newbury hurdle and won the Sussex Champion Hurdle, but both at 2m and in poor form in the autumn.

IRISH HILL (6-10-12 Paul Nicholls) Well behind in the Martin Pipe and the equivalent at Aintree and blinkered when back to form, though well beaten at the line, at Newbury in December. Blinkers off now.

MOTHILL (6-10-9 Neil Mulholland) Goes for a hurdles hat-trick in this but must raise his game from class 4.

HERMIONO AA (7-11-0 Gary Moore) Swerves more chases after decent third, back to hurdles at Cheltenham (3m) in December.

SERIOUS OPERATOR (7-10-11 Lucinda Russell) Going (GS) in his favour when back to form at Doncaster last month.

KALEB (6-10-8 Amy Murphy) Good effort, runner-up at Sandown (2m) in November, but has won only his maiden, always a bad sign.

DOUGLAS Dc (6-10-4 Tony Carroll) Formerly with Gordon Elliott, stayed on, fourth, at Ascot (2m) on first run for new yard, but has won only his maiden, always a bad sign.

THE THING IS ….

⭕ 1.55 Catterick This looks a good move by Jonjo O’Neill to run Hasthing at a level which I suspect is a good deal lower than what he might be eventually capable of. The reason being that although he won on his hurdling debut at Leicester, his jumping very much needs to be improved and at this level he shouldn’t be under pressure on that front.

The slowly, slowly approach can reap dividends in the long term and we already know that Hasthing has touch of class. He won his first two bumpers and rounded off last season with an excellent third in the Grade 2 bumper at Aintree won by Florida Dreams and was only beaten two lengths.

He should prove too strong for the fellow-penalised Here Comes Georgie who got off the mark at Carlisle last month but this looks tougher.

At bigger prices on Betdaq Betting Exchange Defence Witness is an interesting recruit. He is unbeaten with a debut point win by 20 lengths and a win here at Catterick when winning a four runner bumper in good style.

At double figure odds I have to include him given his potential – even though Hasthing, on form to date, still rates as the nap of the day.

BULLISH ON BULBECK

⭕ 3.50 Southwell The second division of the stayers handicap can go to the ten-year-old Swaffham Bulbeck who is lightly raced on the flat.

He’s kept mainly to the jumps these days where he is a useful hurdler but off just 54 here could be remarkably well handicapped in a race littered with question marks.

His last flat run was nearly a year ago when he finished second at Kempton in a race that looked better than this.

Heatherdown Hero was heading the early market but makes limited appeal. He let his supporters down when beaten 17 lengths at Newcastle last week and was never at the races despite being sent off the 7/2 favourite.

NOT EXTREME TO TRUST ULTRAMARINE

⭕ 8.00 Chelmsford The best race on tonight’s card is this seven furlong handicap and despite there only being seven runners it looks very open.

The choice on pure handicapping grounds though has to be Ultramarine who escapes a penalty for his comfortable win at Kempton on Saturday night which came in an apprentice event. Hayley Turner takes over and trainer David Evans is in good form.

He’s set to go up 8lb which is a chunk and should be able to complete the hat-trick prior to that hike.

Love De Vega continues to run well but is now eight without a win and not getting any respite from the handicapper.
