HEADS UP FOR BETDAQ VALUE AT THREE THREE-DAY MEETINGS: Today sees the launch of three three-day summer festivals. It’s Day 1 of the Irish Derby meeting at the Curragh tonight but before that the start of a Thursday-to-Saturday feast on the July Course at Newmarket and the opening of Newcastle’s Tapeta-track Northumberland Plate meeting. Daqman starts each venue with a Heads-Up value hint for the weekend but the big tip is to keep your Daq up and follow the markets for the 65 races at the three venues.
HATS OFF TO BETDAQ 7.5 SENIORITY
NEWCASTLE HEADS-UP: In the three years of the three-day Newcastle meeting on Tapeta, Hugo Palmer is the leading trainer. In Saturday’s Chipchase Stakes (2.25), he saddles Encrypted, a scorer second run back in the last two years.
Encrypted’s first run this year was behind Kachy in the AW Sprint Championship Stakes at Lingfield in April.
4.05 Newcastle (Seaton Delaval Handicap) Bowerman started his career in a maiden on this track in November, 2016, beaten a head by a youngster of John Gosden’s, name of Stradivarius!
The rest is history, as they say. But Bowerman hasn’t performed too badly; he’s won three of four races, eased down to score easily, back at Newcastle on the last day.
This afternoon is Bowerman’s big test at around 2-1, raised in class and, with the handicapper deciding he was a hidden horse on that last day, raising him 9lb so that he’s giving a stone now to the third horse home, Trevithick.
There was talk of the Royal Hunt Cup but, with just five races on his CV, he’s obviously a difficult horse to keep right and he’s had another holiday of 59 days.
Baltic Baron was a bridesmaid in France with five seconds in eight starts, and has continued that way since he moved from Andre Fabre to David O’Meara, second twice this month already.
Another who is struggling to catch the bouquet is Qaroun, with form figures of 232 and going up the handicap without winning. Easy to back this morning.
The second leg of Crownthorpe’s two out of three came on this Tapeta. He’s up 10lb, and Bedouin’s Story, runner-up on the last day is now weighted to close him down.
The royal runner Seniority (7.5 and better on BETDAQ early doors) has won three times on Polytrack and collateral form through his second in a top mile handicap at Epsom suggests that he’s well up to winning this, with William Haggas’s stable in white-hot form.
Hats off! Let’s wish the Queen a winner and thank our lucky stars that we are not the ones obliged to spend three days with Donald and to live in expectation that Boris will be coming to call.
‘MAK’ CAN MAKE IT A MOORE TREBLE
NEWMARKET HEADS-UP: Three-year-olds start to beat older horses about now, thanks to conditions-race concessions and the handicap weight-for-age differentials. Five years out of six, three-year-olds have won Saturday’s fillies’ handicap (5.35).
4.25 Newmarket Makzeem loves this course. He won today’s race two years ago and followed up with an excellent second in the Silver Bunbury Cup.
Then last year he was fifth in the main-event Bunbury Cup, off a mark 3lb higher than today. Ryan Moore goes for a hat-trick in this race, partnering 8.0 BETDAQ offer Makzeem today.
Land Of Legends (around 2-1) launched his career as runner-up to King Of Comedy and found 7f was just right for him at Kempton on the last day. He’s only three and gets 18lb, a bonus weight for age.
Love Dreams was beaten by Kimifive at Goodwood (Apex King fourth) but is worse off at the weights because he’s won since at Beverley.
Corazon Espinado would have to come into calculations, if this race were being run at Epsom. Medahim won on the July Course in 2017 and is now down close to that winning mark.
10.0 BOOST FOR BIG HANDICAP PRIZE
CURRAGH HEADS-UP: Six times in the decade, the one-mile Celebration Stakes (2.55 Saturday) has been won by the one stall. Stall 3 has won twice and 5 once. Only one winner has been drawn six or higher.
7.45 The Curragh (Rockingham Handicap) A cracking 125,000-euro affair, which English raiders have won four times since 2011.
It’s prompted a quick return to Ireland by John Quinn’s El Astronaute, who got the better of Smash Williams and Ardhoomey at Cork 13 days ago.
He has to give them a bit more weight here but neither looked likely to get on terms with him at Cork on a similar yielding surface.
There is one from that race now hugely better off, and that’s Rapid Reaction, getting 8lb at Cork but 16lb today, with Andrew Slattery (won it in 2016) now allowed to use his 5lb claim. So a pull of nearly a stone for two-and-a-half lengths.
My reaction is less rapid when I see that the filly has only ever won at Naas and that she’s 15lb higher than the last time she scored. It all gets me looking elsewhere for the winner.
Eqtidaar’s half-brother Hathiq was a clear winner on his last Curragh start but was sent on too bold a mission to Epsom to complete his hat-trick with success in the Dash; no way.
Dark Shot was second in the Dash after a battle with Duke Of Firenze at York.
As they used to say, there’s only a cigarette paper between them at the weights now.
I’ll take a chance on the three-year-old. Aidan O’Brien showed that it could be done when he won it last year with Battle Of Jericho.
Now the Dandy Man filly Nitro Boost (around 10-1) tries to follow up her easy Curragh CD win of three weeks ago, after a Listed third at Cork. She’s improving all the time and gets 21lb from El Astronaute, including Nathan Crosse’s 7lb claim.
