BIG BOXING DAY DOUBLE BID
★ STAR youngsters in seven big Boxing Day tests, and more tomorrow with Christmas engagements for the Daqman Fortune Cookies.
⭕ 1.35 Wetherby, Boxing Day (Rowland Meyrick Chase) Young improvers only; no winner over the age of eight since 2004. Two northern aces may be played..
If Famous Bridge runs in the Tommy Whittle at Haydock on Saturday, that would leave his Nicky Richards stablemate, Houston Texas, to attempt a notable weekend double for the yard at Wetherby.
⭕ 2.20 Leopardstown (Racing Post Novice Chase) This has lit the touch-paper for Douvan and Min, two of six Willie Mullins winners of the race in the last eight years.
Mullins stablemates Facile Vega and Il Etait Temps were one-two, seven lengths between them, for the Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown in April.
Will they meet again over fences, with both having won on their chasing debut? It could be that Mullins splits them between this race and the Faugheen at Limerick two days later.
⭕ 2.57 Market Rasen (Lincolnshire National) Gavin Sheehan, who rode Fugitif to take the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham last Saturday, steered Suzy Smith’s unexposed Animal to victory at Sandown earlier in the month.
Animal, who was impressive that day, has already raced three times at Market Rasen, which is a similar hilly right-hander to Sandown with a long straight.
⭕ 1.28 Wincanton (Lord Stalbridge Cup) Animal is also engaged in this one, also going right-handed but on a much sharper track with a high-rise back straight and tricky downhill fences on the run home.
⭕ 1.20 Kempton (Kauto Star Novices Chase) has thrown up Gold Cup winner Coneygree (2014) and King George star Bravemansgame (2021).
Braveman’s stable sends out Hermes Allen to face four last–time winners which include Gordon Elliott’s Imagine and Willie Mullins’ Grangeclare West.
But there could be a new challenge for Cheltenham glory in March by French ace rider James Reveley who may introduce six-times Auteuil winner, Il Est Francais, to the Kempton fences.
⭕ 1.55 Kempton (Christmas Hurdle) looks one-sided, though it will be interesting if Paul Nicholls’ improver, Rubaud takes on Constitution Hill.
Constitution Hill (six in a row) and Rubaud (six out of eight) are a league apart but have top and second-top ratings (175 to 149) winner, Il Est Francais, to the Kempton fences.
⭕ 2.30 Kempton (King George VI Chase) Previewed earlier. Confirmed runners and BETDAQ Sportsbook prices: 2.75 Allaho, 3.25 Bravemansgame, 6 Gerri Colombe, 6.5 Shishkin, 9 Royal Pagaille and The Real Whacker, 15 Hewick, 34 Frodon.
PLAY THE JOKER AT EXETER
⭕ 2.25 Exeter today It’s generally a disappointing card here, with an amateur-jockeys’ race and a maiden. And Molly Ollys Wishes has been a disappointing mare.
She won Listeds, even a Grade 2, at the turn of the year a couple of seasons back, scoring three times in a row after a break.
She couldn’t cope with the big field at Chepstow for her return in October. Much better at Wetherby the last day in first-time cheekpieces but not one to rely on.
Issam is a CD winner at a lower level and Quinta Do Mar needs a soundish surface.
So I’ll look to Joker De Mai to play the trump card. Scooted up at Lingfield and the 7lb penalty doesn’t cover the handicapper’s opinion; he’s 3lb well in today on his revised rating for the future.
SEE YOU LATER, ALLIGATOR
⭕ 4.10 Southwell A class-2 sprint on the Southwell Tapeta, a surface Alligator Alley enjoyed when scoring at this level at Newcastle in August, making up for a neck defeat in a big field at York.
It’s put him up to 95 here but the Alligator scored twice at Southwell among three wins in row last year at this time, starting the sequence off 92 and completing the hat–trick off 100.
Fine Wine was runner-up that day, beaten a length and a half, joint-favourite with the winner, giving him 3lb.
He’s usually behind Alligator Alley but did beat him over the CD in November last year when that one missed the break.
O’MEARA RUNS RIOT TONIGHT
⭕ 7.00 Chelmsford David O’Meara, who trains Alligator Alley, has Riot going for a CD hat-trick over 7f here.
The difference in this final leg is that the Kingman gelding is up a grade to class 3, though only 4lb higher for his two victories and, in fact, racing off 9st 2lb where he’s been asked to hump anything up to 10st lately in class 4.
Of the three-year-olds, Prince Of Zenda, also a Kingman, was placed three times on AW as a two-year-old.
Gelded but to little effect this year until beating three others on soft ground at Chester by 12 lengths, 21 lengths and 33. He’s a saver for me on Betdaq Betting Exchange
