GUINEAS TRIALS AT NEWMARKET: The ‘real racing’ starts today, the Craven meeting on turf at Newmarket headquarters in a week of 2,000 Guineas trials on the Rowley Mile course there and at Newbury. Daqman investigates and makes the following headlines:
🔸 GODOLPHIN TALKING HORSE
🔸 BLANCO AT PEAK ALREADY
🔸 STARTLED NO SHOCK TO ME
🔸 WE NEVER STOP WINNING
🔸 A GREAT ADVANTAGE..
YOU COULDN’T MISS SAIGON: Daqman started the week with a profit thanks to 6/4 winner Evening Saigon at Newcastle last night. All three of his selections finished in the frame in a ‘321’ day.
GODOLPHIN TALKING HORSE
Not so classic? The 2,000 Guineas, notable for Aidan O’Brien flops in the last few years, and easy pickings for Godolphin (three from four) looks even less of a classic with, this time, a Godolphin flop among front-runners in the market!
Charlie Appleby, their trainer, won the Newmarket Guineas last year with a Listed winner of the Jumeirah 2000 Guineas at Meydan, and he sent Talk Of New York there on a copycat mission in February but he was beaten favourite at 9-4 on.
Excuses were made but the Wootton Bassett colt now swerves the Greenham trial on Saturday for a lowly conditions race today – hooded!
It’s the 2.25 Newmarket which the stable has won before with one subsequently humiliated with form of 430402300040.
It’s redemption day, too, for jockey William Buick, who got caught up in traffic off a false pace in a Group 1 at Keeneland on Friday, finishing fourth of seven on the 2024 Guineas winner Notable Speech.
BLANCO AT PEAK ALREADY
⭕ 1.15 Newmarket Charlie Appleby is in top form in UK. An early starter, he has had six winners in the first three races over the last eight years.
And he already has 12 winners this year, 10 for three-year-olds on AW at a strike rate of 48%.
Cerro Blanco, ‘white peak’, out of a Dubawi mare of course, is one among the final crops of Wootton Bassett. He is not two years old until next Tuesday but has been working like a three-year-old on the gallops.
STARTLED NO SHOCK TO ME
⭕ 3.00 Newmarket William Haggas and Tom Marquand go for a hat-trick in this 3yo 7f handicap with Hardy’s Hero, but the Haggas stable is currently in the doldrums – only 1-18 – and with its April favourites all beaten (0030).
Richard Hughes has won this handicap before and second and third to his Nottingham winner Startled both won well next time out.
Now Startled drops down two grades after being beaten less than a length on his first start this year at Lingfield. Betdaq Betting Exchange 8.1.
WE NEVER STOP WINNING
⭕ 3.35 Newmarket A low draw usually wins this sprint and another down in grade today is We Never Stop (stall 5), who is a likely front-runner fit from AW. BETDAQ 6.3.
Dyonisis (out of gate 2 for Buick), a big-field third on the Meydan turf in February, is also likely to be fighting fit. BETDAQ 8.1.
A GREAT ADVANTAGE..
⭕ 4.45 Newmarket Let’s see if the low draw holds good on the Rowley mile. Last six years winner by stall: 2, 4, 4, 9, 2, 2. Every favourite defeated.
With Andrew Balding getting 20 in the frame in April already, six of them winners, I fancy Mister Winston to set the pace, first run after being gelded.
Drawn 2 under Oisin Murphy, next door to Great Chieftain (3) and William Buick, CD winner here and another fit from Meydan.

What are points? Points facilitate a staking plan, which is the secret to creating profit. One point is whatever you choose: a pound, a euro, or whatever ….
Start with a bank and decide how much you can afford to lose over a period of time, and determine the size of your bets accordingly. Daqman makes this variation every day.
