50% STRIKE RATE AT LINGFIELD: Daqman finished in front for the second day in succession after a dream start for two wins out of four at Lingfield yesterday, when his nap took a soft fall early on:

WON 9-4 JESSBER’S DREAM
WON 5-4 SIROP DE MENTHE

TODAY’S PREVIEWS: Fighting chance for the favourites at Newcastle and a Sunday feast of top trials in store at Fairyhouse.

TOMORROW’S GUIDE: Daqman’s ABC guide to the Hennessy Gold Cup tomorrow has the XX Lay Factor.

IT’S A BRAVE MAN WHO OPPOSES WILLIE MULLINS

Follow the Fighting favourites! With one exception, Saturday’s Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle has gone to horses at 4-1 or less at SP, and a battle at the front of the market seems likely again.

There’s a new favourite in some books today, Willie Mullins’ Wicklow Brave, who takes on last year’s Paul Nicholls’ winner, Irving. Wicklow Brave was a recent third in the Morgiana behind Nichols Canyon and Faugheen.

Eight out of 10 Fighting Fifth winners have been five or six years old, and Iriving is the old man of the party at seven, but it’s hard to see anything else that can knock the ratings of Wicklow Brave 166 and Irving 162.

HOT SPOT: The Rehearsal Chase on the same card has been won three years in the last four by Colin Tizzard’s Cue Card stable, which now saddles Masters Hill.

Masters Hill’s form in the last year is 2212 still standing, and he’s had a solid run back at Carlisle on heavy ground. He unseated at Cheltenham in March but ran well in the Albert Bartlett there the year before.

INVEST YOUR MONEY IN A BACHASSON BOND..

There’s a three-course Sunday feast. Fairyhouse provides a trio of hot trial dishes with the Royal Bond (1.10) for starters, quickly followed by the Hatton’s Grace (1.40) as main course, with the Drinmore (2.40) a tasty late dessert.

ROYAL BOND: Some fab four-year-olds have won this: Muirhead, Hurricane Fly, Jezki and Nichols Canyon.

Now Bachasson, unbeaten in six starts since his debut – two bumpers and four hurdles – is the likely star yet again for Willie Mullins, who has won the race four times since 2008.

HATTON’S GRACE: By the time they were five or six, Hurricane Fly and Jezki had moved on to take this 2m 4f test for top hurdlers. Arctic Fire is likely to swerve the Fighting Fifth and grace the winners’ enclosure for Willie Mullins.

DRINMORE: This novice chase was won last year by Saturday’s Hennessy hope, Valseur Lido (Mullins again), and previously by Don Cossack. Could be Shantou Flyer to break the Mullins mould after his Florida Pearl hurdle success for Colin Bowe at Punchestown.

.. WITH SHARES IN SHALIANZI AND JOIN THE NAVY

2.10 Fontwell All four of Join The Navy’s wins have come on heavy ground, one of them here at Fontwell.

He should see off the maidens City Supreme, Padova, Arquebusier and Appropriate, which leaves the one-paced Spa Hill (last won in August, 2013), Rolling Dough (best on a sound surface), and Shalianzi.

Shalianzi is a Fontwell winner on a sound surface off a 10lb lower mark, though he did win at Stratford after reassessment, also on good ground.

Spa Hill and City Supreme are false favourites from what we know of them, and that allows us to back both Shalianzi (4.7 best on BETDAQ) and Join The Navy (6.4).

2.25 Wetherby The hot travellers may be worth mixed multiples: Draytonian (12.50), up from Somerset; Tudor City (1.50) over from Ireland on a solo mission; and Cajun Fiddle (3.30) from Wiltshire, reckoned to be Listed class.

Three Northern trainers out of the six in this 2.25 are in cracking form, too: Micky Hammond (Yorkist) is on a five-timer; Malcom Jefferson (Grey Life) on a hat-trick; and Sue Smith (Forward Flight) is three out of five.

Forward Flight is a glass horse who is hard to trust on the day, and my choice is between Yorkist – dropped in class – and Grey Life, who gets a stone but lacks a run, and is unlikely to improve further at the age of nine, going on 10.

There was plenty of liquidity in 4.0 offers about Yorkist in the BETDAQ orange this morning, and he looks better class.

SEE YOU LATER ALEATOR

2.35 Lingfield Man Of Harlech is 10lb higher than when runner-up over a mile on today’s course in August.

Stencive and Swing Easy are glass horses who haven’t scored since 2012 and 2013, respectively, while Mythical Madness has failed to reach the frame either here or at Chelmsford in two AW attempts.

Giantstepsahead should set the pace for Aleator, who rates the nap on his running-on third to the prolific winner Mindurownbussiness, with trainer Sir Mark Prescott looking for a hat-trick to follow up two wins last week.
