BANKER IS A ‘HANDICAPPING ERROR’: Daqman has two whispers from his contacts today, one he puts into his Fortune Cookies for Saturday’s Northumberland Plate at Newcastle; the other is reckoned a handicapping error at Newbury tonight. Banker.

14-1, 12-1: MORE OUTSIDERS TODAY: Daqman has bets at 6.0, 9.4, 10.5 and 26.0, as he trawls the opening cards of three-day meetings at Newcastle and Newmarket (July) . His outsiders yesterday paid off: Alejandro (2nd 14-1) and Woody Bay (4th 12-1). The nap, Red Box (2nd 2-1 favourite), was a plunge horse but ran green.

FORTUNE COOKIES: RED FOR ‘GO’ IN DERBY

THE Red signal for US Army Ranger (bad scope) and a distinct amber for Harzand (recovering from antibiotics) for Saturday’s Irish Derby lets in Red Verdon.

Ed Dunlop’s Epsom Derby sixth (hampered; not well placed) joins Daqman’s Fortune Cookies, along with two of Sir Michael Stoute’s, including Dartmouth who, like Red Verdon, has progressed from handicaps to Group contention.

The revised list is all about handicappers doing good, or potentially so, with Dannyday, the second new Stoute ‘cookie’ in the jar, lining up for the Northumberland Plate at Newcastle on Saturday.

HOPE FOR A 5.6 RETURN ON BETDAQ AT HQ

3.05 Newmarket The market has been quick to spot that this is a race for three-year-olds to show their growing domination, and they were betting 10.5 bar the three from the Clsssic generation in the BETDAQ orange this morning.

Ed Walker and George Baker have a 26% record on the course, and 5.6 BETDAQ bet Hope Cove, who failed to step up to class 2 in two tries in the Spring, should be more comfortable dropped back to this class 4.

Fawaareq comes here from success in a north-country maiden and, when Frenchman tried a similar step up, he failed in class 5.

MOVE YOUR CHIPS INTO THE BLACK AT 9.4

4.00 Newcastle (Seaton Delaval Handicap) David O’Meara is on 27 consecutive losers. He’s slumped to a 10% overall strike rate and his AW form is even worse (5-61 this year).

No wonder the 3-1 paper favourite Alfred Hutchinson is easy to back (6.4 best in the BETDAQ orange this morning), despite six Polytrack successes up to January, 2014 and a fair third on the last day at York. Still higher than his best winning mark.

But it’s a tricky race. Baraweez, Father Bertie and Jacobn Black have all set the pace at some time or other.

I fancy Jacon Black (at around 9.4, as I write), another whose May return promised little but he had a good run at this time last year and trainer Keither Dalgleish hit form with a double yesterday.

4.35 Newcastle Mark Johnston has already landed two handicaps from three attempts on the new man-made Newcastle surface.

‘You can’t win unless you’re in’ seems to be his motto, and he runs his horses time and again. But not Enlace; at least not this year. We’ve seen her only twice since October.

Two quick runs in May should have set her up for a strike very soon. She’s won three times at Goodwood, where Johnston is noted for his plotting.

So I’m thinking a bit of 26.0 in this can do no harm, with a view to keeping most of our Enlace powder dry for Goodwood, with this as her prep.

The likely winner of this Tapeta test – he’s already won on Polytrack – is Can’t Change It, who is on a 7f hat-trick this afternoon. Unlucky to miss the Royal Hunt Cup (first reserve).

HUGE FUTURE A HANDICAPPING ERROR

7.15 Newbury The three-year-olds are well worth their allowance again here, and the word is that Huge Future has just that.

By Shamardal, sire of Lope De Vega, who himself is now doing so well, Huge Future (2.8 on BETDAQ as I write) is from the line of the fabulous Time Charter on the dam’s side.

Never came out of cruise control, and only had to be pushed out on the AW earlier this month and my man in the long grass says he’s ‘value for another stone in the ratings; a handicapping rick.’
