RYAN ON THE EURO QUALFIERS: It’s a big night in Euro 2016 qualifying as we see teams jockeying for position in the business end of the campaign. Few teams will garner more attention than England that’s where we simply have to start.
The market absolutely loves England. I mean it adores this team. The odds are so heavily in Roy Hodgson’s charges favour that you would think this had been a campaign covered in unquestioned glory and there were no doubts whatsoever about this team. The odds on this game suggest England will romp home, not just in this match but all the way to the title in the summer of 2016. That is, to put it mildly, excessive.
England may be perfect through the first four games but it’s not like Lithuania are Liechtenstein. The Baltic nation may be better known for basketball but it’s proven capable in defence through the first four games. I don’t expect any big upset here but this is the type of team that can lose with dignity in Wembley. Looking at the market, that means we have to look at the total goals for value. Under 2.5 looks by far the best shout here at 2.24. Take that and trust Hodgson’s team to win but without pushing down too hard on the gas.
Spain may not be the force they were back when they lifted this trophy in 2012, their third straight major championship win, but on Friday night they face a team that is also past its better days. Ukraine has over-performed through the early stages of qualification, level on points with Spain after four games. This week, I expect the visitors to feel the slide big time as a Spanish team with something to prove takes care of business in style. The best value here is in the Asian Handicap where I’m taking Spain -1.5 at 1.94.
Finally we turn to a surprisingly big game in Group G where Russia badly need a win. They head to Montenegro for a particularly tricky tie against a side level with them on points after four games. It’s actually a tad shocking that a Montenegro team that drew with Liechtenstein is still in the running but Irish soccer fans know that occasionally, those kinds of blips happen. The biggest issue for both sides is scoring, with neither looking particularly potent in attack. Russia however should have the quality to pull through and edge it. Bet on Russia at 2.1 to win.
